Sky mini boxes Sky q and fibrus

I am getting Fibrus installed and want to ensure I will be able to use Sky Q and the 2 mini boxes is this possible?

Hi @Johnc261a

Depends what supplier you are changing from.

Alll 3rd party suppliers should give you similar connectivity.

If you are changing from Sky Broadband there are two main differences to 3rd party suppliers

  • Minis if on WiFi cannot connect to 3rd party routers and must connect to the main Q box or another connected mini or a Q booster.   On Sky WiFi they can also connect to the router.
  • With Sky Broadband there is no interference from other WiFi Networks and there is only the Q mesh WiFi.   With 3rd party broadband and Q there are two WiFi networks (Sky mesh and the Router WiFi)

Having said this I am sure there  are millions on Q subscribers on 3rd Party broadband .

WiFi connection can never be guaranteed unfortunately.

Re: Sky mini boxes Sky q and fibrus

Thanks for getting back to me. I am switching from Sky broadband as network is poor on the countryside . So if I connect the Sky Q directly to the router and then the mini boxes to to the Sky Q box then this should work?

Hi @Johnc261a

When you say connect the Q box directly to the router is this by WiFi or Ethernet?

Yes the minis should be connected if using WiFi to the main Q box (or a mini if nearer)

If you connect the mini nearest to to main Q box first then for the second mini you can connect it by WiFi to the first mini or the main box whichever is nearest.

As I say there are no guarantees with WiFi as depends on distances and materials of objects between devices.

There are Q WiFi boosters available which Sky should supply to aid connectivity.

Re: Sky mini boxes Sky q and fibrus

I've been advised that connecting with the Ethernet to the Sky Q box would be best to get the minis connected, would this be true

This would certainly give a better connection to the Main box @Johnc261a

The better the main Q box connection should give a better chance for the minis to connect.

Re: Sky mini boxes Sky q and fibrus

I'm just going through this process.  Moving from Sky BB to Starlink.  I have connected the main Sky Q box wirelessly to the Starlink router - all good, then I have run ethernet cable directly betweek Sky Q box to the furthest away minibox (as it's in an area where wifi cannot get through, even with multiple wifi extenders).  That works too, although the wifi hotspot which I used to use with the minibox no longer works (it only works with Sky BB).  My next step is to connect my 2nd minibox to Sky Q via a Sky wifi extender as we can get wifi to it, but only via a booster.  I'm hoping that will work!

You could try a powerline connection as you have the first one connected over ethernet too. (Needs a cheap ethernet switch near the Q)

Thanks for your input., it's getting installed on the 4th so the more options the better.

No problem. That was aimed at Jimbu but same theory could apply to your situation (although direct ethernet is preferable to powerline, albeit needs a bit of engineering to route the cable out there)

Re: Sky mini boxes Sky q and fibrus

Thanks.  The ethernet line is run externally round the house from Sky Q to minibox.  I'm planning to get a couple of switches so that I can route the Sky Q and Starlink router signals through that cable and at the other end use another switch to connect the minibox and a Starlink mesh unit.
