Sky disconnecting from my broadband almost every day

I have had this problem for a few months where Sky Q disconnects from my router every few days.   I reconnect via WPS but it's a nuisance,   I spoke to EE and they said my router was fine but did send me a new one last week.   Exactly the same problem.   Sky Q disconnects every day.   In the past I've done resets etc and I have Sky on permanently now.   But the problem persists.   Recently it tried to connect to another EE WiFi (not password protected) rather than mine.   I am getting red up with this.  It's impossible to get hold of a human being at Sky and I have exhausted the EE route.   Any suggestions??

So far so good.   All is working fine with the power line and Ethernet cable - more than a week which is brilliant,   Today it took a second to recognise that there was an Ethernet cable.   Many thanks for all the suggestions.

Hi @Sarah1948   As far as I know, you should only be using WPS with Sky broadband. You should connect using SSID & Password connecting the Main Sky Q box with EE.

Re: Sky disconnecting from my broadband almost every day

I haven't found anything to say that I cannot use WPS with non-Sky broadband.   It works well and is obviously quicker.    I rather doubt using WPS has any bearing on the disconnection issue.

Hi @Sarah1948

try Googling the following

can you use WPS to connect Q box to 3rd party router

Re: Sky disconnecting from my broadband almost every day

I googled and yes I can use WPS with a 3rd party supplier.  I plan to try a power line and see if that makes any difference.   An Ethernet cable would be difficult due to the configuration of the room although the distance is small (across a carpet!).

Sky themselves specifically advise otherwise (AI search results may differ)

As you've discovered, WPS works to some extent, but not very well.

Re: Sky disconnecting from my broadband almost every day

That's as may be but it has made no difference whether I use WPS or enter the password to connect to my router.   It still drops out nearly every day.

Hi @Sarah1948   It sounds like it is time to contact Sky or use Ethernet or Powerline adapters.

The network reset process specifically says to only use WPS with sky routers. I suspect this is because the Q Box shares the login details it knows about with minis and it doesn't get those if you use WPS.

The Q wifi connection to 3rd party routers is abysmal. Powerline is a good plan.

Re: Sky disconnecting from my broadband almost every day

Try setting your sky box to use a specific IP address - easiest from your router using MAC addressing, but you can set it manually in your sky q box too - make sure you use an address that your router DHCP server can't assign, but in the same Subnet (so if your DHCP server is assigning addresses from 192.168.1.10 - 192.168.1.100, either set an address below 10 or above 100, remembering your router probably reserved 192.168.1.1 (so 192.168.1.2, or 192.168.1.101 etc). If you're doing this, also take the chance to set a decent DNS server too, as Skys are lamentable in my experience - set it for cloudflare at 1.1.1.1, or Google at 8.8.8.8, and it should make

Hi NoName

Many thanks for this.  I fear your suggestion is probably beyond my competence!!  But I have just installed a power line with an Ethernet cable so am hopeful that this will solve the problem.

Re: Sky disconnecting from my broadband almost every day

I posted a step by step for setting the DNS in this discussion: https://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Sky-Q/Starlink-and-Sky-Q/m-p/5111328#M715116

It tells you how to set the DNS manually, and the same pages can be used to set the IP manually if that helps any.

Re: Sky disconnecting from my broadband almost every day

since the fiasco of monday and tuesday this week, a new issue startedd wednesday in havign to reconnect the main skyQ box to the internet, no internet detected  to we are detectign your broadband router but not detecting wifi, having to turn off the skyQ box and reboot this anywhere from 1-4 times a day and then having to do the same with the mini box as well everyday 1-2 times (usually when you switch it on for teh first time that day and then again if you had switched it off and back on 30 mins or so later). Its becoming a pain.

Doesnt seem to affect computer/or other wifi devices just teh skyQ box's which leads me to somethign done has changed somethign with sky services.

I will of course be watching it for the next few days, see if it settles down and fix's itself but if not.....

If you've done this, disable wifi too.

presumably you've installed two powerline adapters, the other one connected to the router, and reset the network on the Q to use ethernet?
