The earliest Sky Q hardware is from 2016, and the latest revision was in 2019.

Realistically the silicon in a £100 set top box from several years ago is not favourably comparable to the processing power in a recent £1000 television set.

One option is to set the Q box to HD by default and let the television set handle the upscaling.

if you have a HDR box then there's nothing newer.

Artefacts in dark areas is likely due to the compression of the source material.

TV settings may be able to reduce it.  (Particularly turn off any additional processing)

Depends on what you're watching and how well it's been encoded.

Dark scenes encoded at a low bit-rate can look shocking with lots of grey, blocky artefacting. If the content is in UHD with HLG HDR then there has been a history of some Sky content looking particularly dark on Samsung TVs with a low peak brightness.

Re: Sky Q new qled tv pixalation in dark scenes ?

I have set the box to HD so the tv does the upscaling

would i get the dark pixalation on an oled tv?

It wholly depends on the source material and the post-processing of the TV.  (The TV can't magic detail out of lower bandwidth source)

Well Sky Q is nearing its tenth birthday which is pretty ancient in TV tech terms.

The blame should really be placed on the broadcasters and the teams who encode the content in the first place. In the UK we get particularly bit-rate starved material which looks noticeably worse than it should. It's the same on some ITVX and Channel 4 content via their apps - some of it is shockingly badly encoded.

The 'better' (or at least modern) box is the Stream puck.

That wouldn't help in regards to the source material.

As already noted, post-processing in modern TV's is always going to be superior to any STB.

Q is effectively 'end of life' and there will not be any new 'recording' boxes.  The future is streaming.
