I was recently given, by Sky, a Sky Q Mini box, which I installed in my bedroom.
First thing in the morning I switch on the TV and the Mini box in the bedroom. Everything works OK, with the Q mini box connecting to my nearby Third Party router.
But...........when I turn on the TV and Sky Q box in the lounge, the Mini box tries to switch its connection to the main Sky Q box, but cannot.
This is probably because of the relative geographical locations of the bedroom and the lounge (lots of corners and walls between them).
Can I disable the Q Minis attempts to connect to the main Sky Q, and thereby force it to continue to connect to my WiFi router?
This last comment would be my preferred option, although, in practice, it is not a problem because I would rarely need both the TVs, lounge and bedroom, to be on at the same time as I am the sole occupant of the property.
Many thank in advance for any helpful comments.

Hi @TonyonSky
Afraid that if using WiFi the mini can only connect to the main Q box when on 3rd party broadband .
Only option for mini to connect to 3rd party router is if all Q boxes are Ethernet connected to router.
Edit
Powerline connection from router to main Q box and also to mini may be an option.

Hi oldfella,
thanks for your response. Unfortunately hard wiring is not a practical option, the geography of the bungalow doesn't lend itself readily to cables running around all over the place. I do prefer hardwiring over WiFi, and have used it on my PC, direct to routeras they're in the same room.
However, I think you slightly missed the point. When the router is on, which it is 24/7, the MIni Q box is quite happy to connect to it. This situation is valid until the main Sky Q box is turned on, when the Mini seems to detect that the main box is on and, by default tries to connect to it, but is unable so to do, due the the geographical situation.
My preferred option would be to be able to change System/Status/Connection to Sky Q box from a tick to a cross. Failing tha, I think I will try the Manual setting option a nd delete all IP addresses except the one for the router.
Cheers
Tony

so the mini must be able to connect to the Q when it's in standby since you're able to watch live TV first thing on the mini, but when the main Q box comes out of standby, the mini can no longer connect? In theory it should never be using the router directly to reach the Q box.

Hi Chodley,
It is a bit strange isn't it. I think I will try disconnecting the Q box form the mains, to see if the Mini is actually connecting to the Q box via the router, or getting Sky via the internet.

You can't get Sky from the internet so I'm 100% sure that will stop it working
and if using wifi it can't connect to the Q via a third party router either, has to be direct. In theory. I'm wondering if the behaviour of the Q wifi internal mesh changes when it's in and out of standby.

I have moved the Mini box into the kitchen, which is connected to the lounge/diner where the Q box is, by a door that is always open. Couldn't be much closer. I'm still not getting a rock solid connection.
I'm beginning to think that the Mini boxes that Sky "give away" are known to be 'iffy' and possibly result in the user buying a Sky booster.
crafty or what?

They don't charge for bosters and they don't even charge for the engineer's time to visit and fit them if required.
The whole Sky Q wifi system is certainly iffy though.
Could there be another wifi network from the router conflicting on the same channel Q wants to use, given how close you moved it and still have problems?
