Sky Q mini box without Sky Q Broadband

I know this has probably been answered multiple times before. But what are you options for connecting mini boxes to the main Sky Q box if you don't have a Sky Q router?  Sky can't provide FTTP to our village but others are, so would like to swap.

Do you have to swap to a wired connection or can the mini and main box still connect via SkyQ Wifi?

I have previously tried Powerline adaptors in the house but never had much success, so not confident that they will provide a solution.

Hi @turnbacktime Mini boxes connect to the main SKYQ box via their own wifi mesh, not to your broadband connection.

The main SKYQ box will connect to a third party broadband router by either wifi or ethernet.

Re: Sky Q mini box without Sky Q Broadband

I have just done the same thing as sky couldnt provide fttp so I have changed ISP. My question is, I have my sky Q main box and 3 mini boxes plus a sky q booster. One of the mini boxes is quite far away and needed the booster to work. Is the booster now useless because I no longer have a sky router or will the booster still boost the signal for the sky mesh system?

Re: Sky Q mini box without Sky Q Broadband

Sorry I can't help with your query. But I have just done the same, switched from sky broadband as they can't provide fttp, waiting for the change in a couple of weeks. Is your  sky q and mini boxes working ok with a different broadband provider?

Re: Sky Q mini box without Sky Q Broadband

I've just changed away from Sky broadband and the mini box isnt working.  It connects and then drops out within about a minute.

The mini may be too far from the main box (which was previously assisted when using Sky broadband).

Alternatively, your new router may be clashing on the 5GHz ch 36 - change the channel on the router to be as far from 36 as possible.

Otherwise, you'll need to call Sky for a booster.

@Unreal276 the booster will still work but you need to connect the booster to either the main Q box or one of the other mini boxes then connect it to the mini box that is far away. It will not connect to your router now
