In spite of repeated checks and reboot attempts one of my 4 Q mini boxes will not connect to the main Q box.
Main Q box has a direct cable connection to BT router, all other 3 mini boxes work fine and I've even tried connecting the troublesome one up to the same TV/room as a working mini box.
Suspect a hardware problem - do I just need to buy a replacement mini box?

I'll let someone else answer your main query but it's worth pointing out you can't buy a replacement mini box. All Sky Q mini boxes are, like the main box, loaned to you for the duration of the multiscreen subscription.

Update - finally managed to connect mini #4 through activating "pairing" signal from nearest active mini box.

Connection to mini box #4 keeps dropping in spite of have 3 other mini boxes, the main Q box, and a signal booster box.
