Sky Q in Garden - how do I setup and prepare

Hi - I'm considering moving a Sky Q mini box to a garden room approximately 20 metres from the house., can I confirm that in order to do this I will need an Ethernet cable to go from my router to Main Sky Q box and then run Ethernet cable from router up to garden and directly into mini box or can this be done via router network in garden room. I'm using Sky Internet. My current Sky Q in house and mini boxes are using Wi-Fi, will I need to change the settings in the respective boxes to reflect using Ethernet? Any help much appreciated

hi @HOOPERT

As your internet is SKY then I think you just need to run ethernet from your Garden Room to your exitisting network.

You only need to connect both main & mini via erhernet if your network is not SKY (although connecting both by ethernet can be more reliable anyway)

You can run ethernet to an unmanaged  switch in your garden room or direct to the mini - using another router is likely not to work as this is likely to put the mini on a different network to the main box

although I am not an expert I think  2 routers on a network is not usually advisable anyway

Re: Sky Q in Garden - how do I setup and prepare

Thank you very much for the advice, what is an unmanaged switch, is that just a point from where I can distribute the internet to the garden room from the Ethernet cable running from house to garden room? Will I just then need 1 cable from router in house to a 'switch' with Ethernet ports garden room then 1 cable from that to the mini box?

can a switch device also generate wi-fi for phones/laptops etc.?

Hi @HOOPERT

An Ethernet switch is purely for multiple Ethernet connections.

See this link

Edit
Ethernet switches do not generate any WiFi.

However if WiFi access points or boosters have Ethernet connections they can be connected by Ethernet to switches.

Boosters etc will then broadcast WiFi.

Thank you. If I required wi-fi should I then look into a wireless access point that the Ethernet cable from house goes into?  For the mini box would I still go from wireless access point using an Ethernet cable into box therefore just using Ethernet for mini box and wi-fi for phone/tablet and laptop?

Ethernet from Hub(prefered) or MainQ to mini in Garden Room. Your mini will act as a Wifi Hotspot, no need for WAP. You'll have full Wifi in garden room as long as you are Sky BB.

Following on from this...

Running Ethernet from switch in house to games room in garden currently works but have no sky q/mini box. How could I get wifi in that room please?

By putting either a Q Mini box, a Sky wireless booster or a standalone wireless acccess point on the end of the ethernet cable.

Using the Sky hardware (if Sky is your ISP) has the advantage of not requiring any configuration.

Re: Sky Q in Garden - how do I setup and prepare

Thanks, we don't have mini box etc.

we literally have broadband so one hub provided by sky.

We have just set it up today and sky have said we have the new style hub which is different tech.
We have broadband as run a switch we bought.
so I don't think their boosters etc would work from what they have said.
I need to wait 24 hours before they can order anything extra. I also have intermittent little/no wifi in lounge at rear of house as too far from hub which is at front of house.
