Sky Q hub router vs Amazon Eero echo dot devices

I have a lot of Alexa Echo devices.  Their tech spec says that they should work with an eero compatible device.

In trying to understand that, I have only found  Sky User problems, no solutions. I can play music multi room through Amaz music. I'm trying to do this with other bluetooth sources but fail.

I don't understand the Sky Q / eero compatibility issue. Can some one tell me, please?

I'm trying to use WiFi or Bluetooth for music multiroom without amazon. Fail.  Is this compatibility issue the problem?

This will need to be moved to the broadband forum, but a couple of things that are worth mentioning:

  1. As far as I know, Amazon have Echo devices (smart speakers) and eero devices (wif routers and mesh) - they are not the same thing. Some  Echo devices are able to create a mesh network with eero, if set up accordingly
  2. The Sky Q hub suggests you have Sky broadband and the Q system will also create a mesh network (if you have mini boxes)

So to answer your question I suspect people will need confirmation of:

  • Who is your broadband provider?
  • Do you use the Sky Q router, eero or both for Wifi?
  • If the answer is "both", the next question is why?

There are  number of potential solutions here, if we can actually understand the set up, the problem and what you are trying to do.

Re: Sky Q hub router vs Amazon Eero echo dot devices

Hi. Thanks so much for your useful reply.

I apologise for the delay in writing back.

I am on Sky Broadband using Sky on a Sky Q router.  I have about twelve Amazon Echo devices.  I cannot get any crossover such as Sky sound shared over Echo network.   It appears not, so I wondered if the Eero tech might help.

In short I was looking to get all of my visual and audio devices functioning over the same WIFI/broadband.  So far, it seems not. Unless you know better?

Thanks for your help.

Re: Sky Q hub router vs Amazon Eero echo dot devices

When we moved house 4 years ago I tried Eero with my Sky Q multi room setup and it did not work at all, drove me crazy. Boxes constantly lost network connection and it took ages to get them all connected again. In the end I gave up and Eero went on EBay. Maybe things have changed since but if not avoid like the plague.

Are you expecting the audio from the Q boxes to play on the echos? That's not going to happen.

Re: Sky Q hub router vs Amazon Eero echo dot devices

No.  Though I suspect you are joking?

The Echo Devices use my WiFi to distribute audio to various configurations of devices or indeed, all the devices at once (which is great!). My WiFi is facilitated a Sky Router, more specifically (I'm told) a Sky Q Router.

As I have other devices, including the telly, connected by WiFi, devices that can talk to each other,  I wondered if my other Android, audio or video devices could transmit to and through the Echo units.

Example: Send audio from my telly to produce sound out of my Echo devices.

I have no expectation whatsoever to produce sound out of my Q box, my Router, my telephone connector or even my rubbish bin.  😁

Well your Q hox can produce sound

it just can't send it over bluetooth, even though it will do the reverse and act as a playback device for a bluetooth / airplay audio source

so no I wasn't joking but appreciated the rubbish bin metaphor 🙂

Re: Sky Q hub router vs Amazon Eero echo dot devices

I feel awful now!

Whilst my reply was intended as a good natured and designed to make you laugh, I cannot deny a smidgeon of sarcasm got past my manners.

I had absolutely no idea that audio could be obtained from my Q Box.  But I pause there.  Which box is officially the 'Q box'?  I have three boxes from Sky.  One is the router, then there is the device plugged in to the TV, that shows me all of the channels and services I have through Sky (which I have always known as my Sky Box).  Then I have a much smaller box that I use to connect to  my additional TV(s) to Sky.  I was told that that box was my Q Box, or Sky Q Mini box.

Despite my demonstration to the contrary, I am not a complete beginner to Sky. Nevertheless,  I had not thought of the two boxes (not the router) as providing audio!  I have always thought the TVs produced the audio.  But now you have said what you have, I realise that I have had the wrong perspective with regard to where audio and video comes from.

Unless you know better (and probably do), this enlightenment doesn't take me any further forward in having (for example) my TV audio broadcast through my Echo devices.

However, I have learned from your input.  I hope my dry sense of humour caused you any offence.

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to help in my query.

Humour rarely offends me, don't worry 😉

I meant the main Q box connected to the TV. The minis can also act as sound "players" for a bluetooth source though. They just send it out to the TV/amp they are connected to. I think this is redundant capability considering you have the Echos.

but yeah, as a source, they all only do it wired.
