If that was the case would sky Q not work at all or would it just have fewer features?

It won't receive a satellite signal, and without that there's no access to other functionality even when these are delivered online.

What about if I dig out my old Sky HD box? I really don't want that Sky Stream thing being 30 seconds behind on football makes it pointless in my view

Your old SKY HD box will only work as a dumb Freesat Receiver - once your account was switched to Q it won;t work in an HD box
