Public DNS made no difference to my problems back in the day

Re: Sky Q box regulary loses internet connection.

I have had problems with my Q box losing wi-fi despite a very strong signal registered at the box's position (from a third party provider).  I tried many things, but most recently I have tried, in 'Advanced Settings', turning on the option to use mini-boxes as wi-fi routers in themselves, AND switching off the eco function (which, when on, returns the box's settings to the previous ones when switching on again next time).  So far, two days in, it is stable, but I have no idea if that will last.  It is very annoying that I have had to resort to this complex arrangement just to get a stable connection!  It smacks of Sky making those using third party providers suffer a degraded service.

Yeah people keep saying that but I never assume malice when simple incompetence can explain the observed facts.

Maybe, but I don't perceive "malice" per se, just a fairly cut-throat business decision (if it is the case).  If it is incompetence, that's very poor, given the number of third party routers there are out there and also given that Sky is supposed to be a tech-based, huge company.

The whole sky q mesh thing is based on a 3rd party's (Airties) networking stack which I'm sure worked perfectly in all their demos to Sky 😉

If Sky were trying to undermine other ISPs, not only would that be extremely risky if ofcom took a look, but they wouldn't have stitched up their own new Sky Max routers the same way.

Re: Sky Q box regulary loses internet connection.

Hmm.  Well, I am now four days in to my changed system set-up to with my one active mini-box (of three altogether - the other two have still to be set up after the house move), which has the Q box linked to the main house TV downstairs, and a mini-box in the bedroom directly above.  The router is in the hall, about 15 metres away and with several (fairly thin) walls between.  The signal strength at the Q box is around 500mbs (900+mbs at the router).  Ever since moving in, I had had several daily drop-outs of the Q box's wi-fi, but four days ago I set the Q box menu's 'Advanced' settings to use the mini-box as a router and turned the Eco function off.  This has given me a stable system (so far).  However, it should not be necessary to have to do this - a less inquisitive and tech-savvy person (and I am far from an expert) would not do so and would still, presumably, sit with the issue.

Re: Sky Q box regulary loses internet connection.

I also meant to add (BTW, why can't posts here be edited to add or correct things!?) that it shouldn't be necessary to turn the 'eco' mode off - not only from the power consumption perspective, but also because I have previously found that leaving the system on permanently can lead to malfunctions in data accuracy.

Re: Sky Q box regulary loses internet connection.

Hi @deepgreen,

Interesting points to note...

Q1, what router do you have?

Q2, is the setting you describe in advanced the use of boxes as hotspots?

Re: Sky Q box regulary loses internet connection.

@Nigel501

Have set my box to 1.1.1.1 DNS, main box only, and so far, have everything working.

Will put it to test tomorrow.

Did you expect it to resolve my connection problems, or just the box not appearing on the My Sky list of connected devices?

Point to note, I havent done this for the mini box...

Re: Sky Q box regulary loses internet connection.

Use of a Public DNS 1.1.1.1 bypasses the ( Enabled by default ) VM Child Safe DNS content filter which I've found stops the connection for sky q

Re: Sky Q box regulary loses internet connection.

Hi @Nigel501 so this morning we are still running, which is a good sign. Especially without all the extra equipment! Yes, I know it was two extra items, but thats teo items I didnt have before WiFi max!

Now, what DNS would you expect to find by default in a Sky Q box? Mine was 192.168.0.1, the same as the router IP...is this correct/expected?

I'd imagine this is set in the sky q box by the Router at the time of connection?

I'd also still be interested to know if this is an erroneous DNS address should I be amending it too in the mini?

Peraps there is somewhere in the router I can change the default and if so, what should it be?
