Sky Q box keeps losing connection to Community Fibre Linksys mesh

Sky Q box keeps losing connection to Community Fibre Linksys mesh wifi. This seems to happen every few weeks, I have spoken to CF and they advise as no other devices (ring, smart plugs, alexa etc) lose connection then it is the Sky Q box thats the problem

I cannot run a cable from the Sky to the CF router as thats not an option, too many bits of furniture and carpet to be moved.

Sky Q box is in my lounge and the CF router is in the opposite corner. When it drops out I have to re enter the password then reconnect all the mini boxes manually to the main Sky q box, its a right PITA. I have 2 other nodes attached to the main router.

Any ideas please

Q won't stay connected to a 3rd party mesh via WiFi.  (Unless connected to a node via Ethernet - even then it can flood the network and cause bandwidth issues)

This is primarily due to the proprietary QoS protocols used that where never designed to be 'shared'.

If a dedicated ethernet network isn't an option, Sky might provide boosters for the Q's own mesh.

Re: Sky Q box keeps losing connection to Community Fibre Linksys mesh

I'm experiencing the same issues, 2 nodes connected to the main router (Linksys). This is happening quite frequently now and if it continues, I think I'll be ditching the whole Sky TV package as I can't be reconfiguring my WifI setttings on Sky every couple of days.

Is there anyone at Sky who can comment on this? ie is a solution planned?

@sarasabel are you saying you are trying to connect mini boxes to 2 nodes by wifi ? if so it wont work if Sky is not you ISP then the mini boxes need to connect to the mesh that is produced by the main Q box so you need to WPS them to the main box and not to you third party wifi

Its been like that since Q was released and you could use third party ISP's

Re: Sky Q box keeps losing connection to Community Fibre Linksys mesh

UPDATE

Had a Sky Engineer round, he replaced the Sky Q Box as a precaution.

He also suggested the best way round my issue was to run an RJ45 cable to the Sky Q Box. I already had a cable in place for my Xbox and did not want to pull up carpets to run another cable so he suggested I buy a Gigabit Netwrok Switch, basically a Rj45 splitter. So I bought a TP-Link TL-SG105S 5 Port Gigabit ethernet switch from Amazon, cost about £14. He made me up 2 x 1m lengths of RJ45 cable which I in turn connected to the Skq box and the xbox and then connected the original RJ45 cable into the switch.

Seeing as I am unlikely to have both the Xbox and Sky Q box on to watch TV at the same time this seemed to be a logical solution.

He also tweaked the Mini boxes to use only 2.5ghz connection to the Sky Q box ( I believe anyone can do this in the settings).

Since then (approx 4 weeks) now it seems to be fine, my Community Fibre Internet has also been fine so not sure if thats a coincidence.

Either way this maybe a possible solution for some people.

Hope it helps

Re: Sky Q box keeps losing connection to Community Fibre Linksys mesh

I use Community Fibre with the Linksys router and nodes. I don't have Sky Q any more but I have found that splitting the WiFi frequencies and renaming the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz channels so that you can connect to them individually really helps with other devices. You can rename them easily using the Linksys app on your mobile.

If I remember correctly, Sky Q will only connect on the 2.4Ghz channel with non-Sky broadband so try changing that frequency name and connecting your Q box to it.

I am having the same problem.

we can't hardwire the sky box as it's too far away.

Will a new sky a box resolve this problem?

Yeah ethernet (even over powerlines) works much better than wifi.

The minis have to use 5GHz to talk to the Q if they are on wifi. Is that what you meant?

there's no reason you can't use the xbox and Q at the same time when they are connected to a switch.

There isn't a 2.5. So you mean 2.4 only? Maybe that works with Sky broadband.
