Sky Q and mini boxes with third party broadband

Hi all, I'm currently having third party broadband installed to get the fibre speeds which SkyBroadband can't offer.  I've read a load of posts here, but finding conflicting info, so am here to try get ahead of the game before fibre switch-on soon.

I have a Sky Q main box and a few mini boxes.

So my quesion is, what do I need to know?  Will everything still work or, as some posts here indicate, do mini boxes not work with third party broadband/wifi?

Thanks!

hi @JK80

When your wifi is not SKy then the SKY mini boxes do not use your wifi - instead they use a wifi signal generated by the main box

So it is not really a question of won't work just a matter of work differently

How well this will work  for each box will depend on how well the wifi generated by the main box & then extended via the minis works.

You can also connect them via ethernet but the main & minis must then be connected together

you are likely to need to reset the network on each of your boxes

Re: Sky Q and mini boxes with third party broadband

Thanks @nigea99 , that's really helpful.

I think it unlikely the wifi from the main box will extend sufficiently to the mini boxes,

When you say that the main & minis must then be connected together, you just mean all boxes need to be hard wired into the same ethernet?

By this I mean that a mini must either be connected directly to the main box or both main & mini must be connected to the router  (i.e. not just connect a mini to the router and let the main box connect to the router over wifi)

Also I forgot to mention with 3rd party wifi, if connecting the main box to thr router via wifi it only uses 2.4Ghz rather than 5Ghz

Re: Sky Q and mini boxes with third party broadband

Thanks again @nigea99.

I think I've got it.  No doubt something will throw a spanner in the works when the new broadband is running, but at least i've now an idea of what to expect.

Wish me luck!

Cheers.
