Sky Q WiFi/Ethernet with third party broadband

I am struggling to work out the networking arrangements with Sky Q. I understand that the main Q box and the minis connect via their own WiFi network. I want to connect them via Ethernet for a more stable connection over longer distances. Is it possible to connect them via Ethernet when not using a Sky router? The Sky engineer told me that when using a non Sky router, it is necessary to run a direct cable between the main box and the mini box. Is this true? I'd like to connect the main box to the network via Ethernet, and then connect the mini to the network via Ethernet too. 

Does anyone know if this will work?

Hi @JJ30 

Yes;   Ethernet to 3rd party router is fine and highly recommended.

When all boxes are connected by Ethernet to your router you can then switch off all Q box WiFi.

Start with main Q box and first carry out a Network reset with the Ethernet connected.
Network Reset found in Q box Home - Settings - Setup - Network.
Highlight Status and then select Reset on the right hand side. Select connect wired to non Sky Router .  Do not carry out any WPS and just wait for the box to connect. It may take a couple of minutes. If it does not connect there is an issue with the Ethernet connection.
As soon as it connects go into the Q box hidden menu and turn off WiFi.

To enter hidden menu press Home and navigate down to Settings but do not select Settings.
With Settings highlighted press 0 0 1 Select.
Go to Network to turn off both bands of WiFi. Confirm before exit.

Repeat the network reset on any minis in the Mini Home menu with the Ethernet connected. Again do not do any WPS and just wait for it to connect.
Once it is connected go into the mini hidden menu (same procedure as above) and turn off both bands of WiFi. Confirm before exit.

That's fine as long as it's a legitimate ethernet topology: you'd then switch off the Q WiFi.

Excuse my ignorance,  but If WiFi is turned off on main and mini box's how do the mini boxes connect to the main box. I thought mini boxes connect to main box over skys mesh network how can this work with WiFi turned off and no direct connection between all boxes

If you turn WiFi off then you have to use Ethernet (wired).

Ok may be this is me being dumb, but if boxes are connected  together by Ethernet and WiFi is turned off and there's only one Ethernet port per box how then do you  obtain an internet connection

You'd need an unmanaged switch and a route back to the router for the DHCP server.
