Sky Q + SKY Q MINI with Vodafone Fibre over powerline
Switching over to Vodafone 900mb fiber on 1st September but keeping Sky Q for my TV package. Seen multiple posts from multiple different forums that say getting Sky Q & Sky Q mini's to work over Vodafone broadband can be tricky and often results in the boxes disconnecting multiple times per day. I've also seen posts that say running the boxes over ethernet via powerline adapters seems to be an option, I'm just confused as to exactly how the set up would work?
I know Sky Q uses a WiFi mesh system where the mini connects to the main box over 5ghz rather than the router itself when using Sky Broadband but I don't know how this would work with a different isp?
Will I have to buy 2 twin pack powerline adapters with 2 plugs connected to the router and the other 2 plugs connected to my main box & mini? Or will I have to connect my main box via WiFi then run powerlines from my main box to my mini box?
I just don't want to end up accidently paying for more than I need. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Sky Q + SKY Q MINI with Vodafone Fibre over powerline
It's the opposite. It connects over a direct mesh with the Q when you are NOT on Sky BB but can piggyback on your normal wifi when you do have SkyBB.
Yeah you need a powerline adapter each place you have an ethernet cable basically. One into router. One into each Q box/mini. I wouldn't mix & match wifi and ethernet as it works best when you disable wifi completely on the Sky devices.
You don't need 2 powerline adapters at the router though, why would you need that?

Re: Sky Q + SKY Q MINI with Vodafone Fibre over powerline
I don't know what I need to be honest. That's the reason for the post. Sorry to sound ignorant but I've never had to use powerline adapters for anything before. I've always used WIFI or direct ethernet and assumed as all of the powerline adapters I've googled come in twin packs, that I would need 2 of them (4 total adapters) to use for my sky Q main box and mini box.
To avoid any confusion, can you give me a step by step of how you would set this up using powerline adapters? Are you saying I just need connect 1 to my router & 1 to the main box via ethernet and my mini box upstairs should pick up a connection off the main box?

Re: Sky Q + SKY Q MINI with Vodafone Fibre over powerline
You do need two for the Q and mini but just one for the router. You sync them to each other by pressing buttons on them which establish encrypted comms. Then plug ethernet cables in. And configure your sky boxes as if they were attached by ethernet. Not much more to it than that. Apart from keeping your fingers crossed that your wiring is up to it 😉

Hi @Darren203 I have Vodafone fibre and it works flawlessly with Sky Q and 2 mini boxes over WiFi.

Re: Sky Q + SKY Q MINI with Vodafone Fibre over powerline
How did you set the boxes up with the Vodafone router? Did you just connect the main box to the WiFi then use WPS to connect the mini's to the main box? Or did you have to connect each Individual one over the 2.4ghz?

Re: Sky Q + SKY Q MINI with Vodafone Fibre over powerline
How is your system doing ?
I changed to vodafone broadband at silly speed three years ago and have a signal booster upstairs initially working okayish but now it is ridicolus.
I have seen that someone split the wifi then secured it so only the sky can connect to that but currently waiting for an engineer to look at it (it is a few years old now)

Re: Sky Q + SKY Q MINI with Vodafone Fibre over powerline
I've had Vodafone fibre for exactly 3 weeks now and so far so good. I'm using 2 tp link av1000 powerline adapters with passthrough plus a single av1000 without. Downstairs box has worked flawlessly since the fibre was installed. Upstairs box has gone off & on 2 or 3 times but I suspect it to be down to really poor WiFi signal in the room that it's located in.
Both main q box and mini box show they are connected over ethernet with the WiFi on both switched off meaning they are strictly using the powerline adapters to connect. When the mini disconnects, it will automatically switch its WIFI back on which I have to manually switch off again once its reconnected to the powerline adapter.

I wish I had done some research on Vodafone broadband and Sky Q... it is bloody awful. Sky Q mini upstairs drops off all the time, so frustrating.. don't really want to shell out on power lines

Re: Sky Q + SKY Q MINI with Vodafone Fibre over powerline
Vodafone full fibre in February 2024 (was with sky before)my house 3 bed semi.
I have Sky Q and two mini boxes.
Cat 5 connects from my router upstairs to the Sky Q box down stairs via a switcher (outputs for other equipment the TV, blue ray and recorder).
Mini box upstairs is on cat 5.
Kitchen mini box stands on its own (no cat 5 never got around to plugging it in works fine).

Re: Sky Q + SKY Q MINI with Vodafone Fibre over powerline
In case anyone searches, I had issues with mini not connecting to my main q box. Save everyone the trouble, con tact sky, they'll send an engineer out and put in a sky booster. Hey presto it all works. My broadband is wirh Vodafone. Save you the hassle, power line adapters will not work, so just get the engineer out to fix it.

Except I'm using powerlines which work great and a booster failed dismally.
