Sky Q Multiroom: Question on setup before I buy

Hi all, hoping you could help with the scenario I'm facing for my parents. Bearing in mind they are in their 80's and my Dad has mild dementia so I'm trying to keep things simple for them.

  1. We would like to upgrade them from Sky+ HD to  Sky Q Multiroom, as the Sky+ HD box has failed and Sky won't replace it / we now can't pair the Sky viewing card with a second hand box (really, really annoying policy).

  2. They have 5 TV's dotted around their house and they would like Sky on each of them (excessive I know, but they are elderly and like the background noise). Up to now they used the RF out of the Sky+ HD and magic eyes to view Sky on the 5 TV's.

  3. To replace the Sky+HD I would like to get 1 Main box (Sky Q 1TB Ultra HD box,  which supports 4 mini boxes) + 4 mini boxes, which would fit their needs.
  4. Based on below link, they can have Sky on the Main box and up to two Sky Q Mini boxes at the same time, for a total of 3 'allowances' as I'll call them.
    1. https://www.sky.com/help/articles/watching-on-multiple-devices-at-the-same-time

  5. Question 1: If they have used Sky on 3 TV's, and then go to a 4th TV, what happens when they turn to Sky? Does one of the previous 3 TV's suddenly switch off as it's lost it's 'allowance' to the 4 the TV?

  6. Question 2: Does turning off a TV with Sky Q then recycle the 'allowance' back into the pool so that another TV take take it instead? Or do we have to turn off the Sky Main / Mini box as well? Hoping it's clever enough that they only ned to turn off the TV to free up the allowance.

Sorry for long post but any help greatly appreciated,

Nick,

London

'Turning off the TV' does nothing: it's a Mini box being put into its Standby mode which permits another to be in use.

Hi @Nikalin   The answer to 5 is the same answer for 6. If they try to use a 3rd Mini box, it will simply tell them that the maximum number of boxes are in use and they need to turn off (put into standby) another Mini box for that one to work. Note, with Sky Q it is called Multiscreen, Multiroom is an old Sky+HD term. On top of the maximum 2 Mini boxes, they could use other screens, like tablets etc.

Given Q is now a decade old and its Multiscreen functionality is distinctly limited, have you considered Sky Stream instead?

Nick I'd be interested in hearing how this goes for you as I'm in a similar position, my parents are also still on Sky+ HD with one completely broken box, and another box barely clinging on. I want to move them to Sky Q, but I'm under the impression that Sky are no longer allowing "new" Sky Q signups? Or are the still letting current customers move to Q if requested?

@jimnastics

Sky Q is still available to order or upgrade to. It's just not as visibly advertised, as ideally Sky owners Comcast want customers to move to Stream or Glass.

hi @jimnastics

They are still taking new SKy Q sign ups, as well as upgrading SKY HD users

BTW @jimnastics  & @Nikalin

You may, also, wish to read some notes I have made for people considering switching from SKY +/HD to SKY Q
