SKY Q MINI not connecting with Sky Q and im using google mesh not sky broadband - and i know NOTHING

Folks:   1.  I know nothing (an abacus is too technical for me).

We have:  Sky Q and a new Sky Q MINI.

Wifi fro a non sky provider comes from their router down ethrenet cable into back of 1st Gen Google Mesh router, then out via an ethrenet into th eback of the main SKY Q Box.  (so when it enters the sky q box it is 'google wifi' not the original 3rd party provider.

Then the Google Mesh transmits google wifi around the house via three other 'mesh points'.

(the house is 1800's with some thick walls weve been able to stream netflix etc everywhere in the house on ipad/TV using this system for info)

We now have a Q Mini for our TV in the room furthest from origin source of wifi.  That TV is able to connect to the google mesh wifi and stream netflix/amaxon etc etc.   HOWEVER, the sky q mini cant hold its connection to the Sky q box and says we dont have internernet (albeit it does say th enetwork is up).    PLEASE HELP ME?    PLEASE GIVE ADVICE IN PLAIN LANGUAGE - IMAGINE YOU'RE EXPLAINING IT TO YOUR GRANNY....THANKS IN ADVANCE

Hi @AmyMcG

You may be aware that minis cannot connect by WiFi to 3rd party routers or mesh systems.  On 3rd party broadband you mini if using WiFi can only connect to the Main Q box WiFi mesh.

Your problem may be due to interference with the Q mesh WiFi caused by the other mesh system you are using.

You could first try the following to see if you can get a stable connection.

First try rebooting the main Q box and then when this is completely back up and running reboot the mini.
To reboot press Standby on your Sky Q remote (if the box responds to the remote), and then switch off and unplug at the mains.
Wait at least 30 secs and then Plug back in and switch your Sky Q box back on at the mains.
Wait for the on screen instructions to disappear and the front led to turn Amber. Then wait for 30 secs before you press Home on your Sky Q remote or if this is not working press the standby button on the front of the Q box (Amber led)

note: some features may take up to 5 minutes to return.

Reboot the mini as above.
If the mini still does not connect reliably try a Network Reset on the mini.
Network Reset found in mini Home - Settings - Setup - Network.
Highlight Status and then select Reset on the right hand side. Follow instructions to WPS with main Q box.
You will be asked to press the WPS button on the main Q box (not the mini as the Network reset will start the mini WPS automatically).

Failing all of the above  a Sky Q WiFi Booster to position midway between your main Q box and the mini could help and you will need to contact Sky directly.

OK thanks for that info.     With regarsd to the 'booster' I was told by Sky over the phone they dont supply them if you dont have Sky wifi?  Ill read the rest of your message again and get back to you if im lost - thanks for your help.

So are you saying the sky q mini has to talk direct to the main sky q box - it cant talk to it 'through' the google wifi?  But surely the SKY Q main box is connected to the google wifi?  Are you saying the main sky q box creates its OWN wifi in effect???  If thats the case how does it ever connect in a large house or one that doesnt have paper thin walls????

Hi @AmyMcG

Thats all correct.

Q WiFi boosters help bridge WiFi gaps.  However where there is another WiFi network there can always be connection problems due to interference.

Full Ethernet connection for all boxes where there is the possibility is always the best option.  Full Ethernet can be used connected to any Broadband.

As your main Q box is already connected by Ethernet I assume it is not practical to connect your mini by Ethernet either to your main box or your Google mesh router.

This can be done either directly or through simple unmanaged switches.

There is also an option to use Two Powerline adaptors to connect the mini.

One unit located at and connected by Ethernet to your router and one at the mini connected by Ethernet.

These then use your Mains wiring as an Ethernet cable for connection.  Powerline is not Guaranteed and success depends heavily on the condition and complexity of your mains wiring.  However it is always worth trying if full Ethernet by cable is not possible.

The main advantage that Ethernet connection gives is that all Q box WiFi can be turned off making the connection more reliable.   If the Powerline is successful it can be just as reliable as cable connection
