Recordings being deleted instead of deleted items

My Sky Q box has reached capacity for the first time and, instead of using the deleted items to make space for new recordings, it's deleting programmes I haven't watched yet. I thought it was supposed to automatically use the deleted items for this purpose. Is there a setting I can change to make it do that instead? Thanks.
