Offer Sky Q upgrade but have questions

Hi We have Sky+ Multiroom - one box and one extra. We have been offered the Sky Q upgrade. I understand we can have Mini boxes so would want another two. Can someone help me understand How does the recording side of it work

if we are watching the Main Sky Q box and also in the two Mini boxes ( which I think is the limit) how many other programmes can you record please.
thanks in advance

@Brianreece
You can have a maximum of 4 mini boxes loaned to you by Sky. You can watch Sky content on two minis and the main box at the same time. You may be able to use a third mini box if the first one in use is being used for a streaming app ie: Netflix or DIsney+.

Be aware the original 1TB (non-UHD) Sky Q box only allows one mini to be in use. All 2TBs and the UHD/HDR 1TB permit two mini boxes. Each mini box which is loaned to you may be subject to a one off upfront charge but you only need one Sky Q monthly Multiscreen subscription.

hi @Brianreece

An extract from some notes I have put together:

Sky Minis do not store the recordings on the mini box – all recordings are stored on the main box & there is no user profile system to separate recordings made from a mini from those made on the main box or by a different user.

Thus, anyone migrating from the old multiscreen with separate boxes may have issues that all the recordings are only stored on the main box and available to all (which can be an advantage)

The number of minis does not alter the amount of recordings you can make

With all but the old non UHD boxes you can record 5 programmes at once & watch a 6th - with an option to turn off mini previews to record 6 & watch a 7th

You may, also, wish to read the rest of the notes I have made for people considering switching from SKY +/HD to SKY Q

SKY +/HD to SKY Q

Any further questions just ask

Thank you. Just one more thing that I couldn't find in your post.

If we are recording four things at the same time (two people currently record in our house on separate Sky+ boxes) can we watch other stuff we have recorded?

Yes. All recordings are to the main box but viewable on the mini boxes (except UHD recordings which is main box only).

Hi @Brianreece

Minis can be used completely independently of the main Q box and the same or different program or recording can be viewed on each Q box. Even if viewing the same content it is completely independent and can be viewed at the same or different point.
Minis can do all the features same as the main Q box and can set or delete recordings on the main Q box hard drive. There is one single storage area on the main Q box with no profiles and no indication of which Q box has set a recording. (Unlike Sky+HD Multiroom which has independent storage and planners).

Just in case it is not clear - any recordings requested result in in a single recording made on the main box

That single recording can be watched simultaneously on different boxes (even at different parts of the recording)

BTW  If more than one person watch the same recordings on different boxes the system marker of how far through it is last watched  to will be set by the last person to watch (i.e. you may find continue watching is not at the point an individual has watched to)
