Basically I have been paying for sky sports for ages. Then all of sudden I can't access the channels. But offered 'free upgrade' if I sign an 18 month contract. I don't get it.

Assuming you didn't cancel the sports package when you phoned Sky up to ask them why you are being asked to upgrade, what did they say ?
