I am getting a new TV soon and want to know if the recordings currently held on my TV will be retained as soon as the new TV is connected to my Sky Q box. Do I need to save them or do anything before the new TV is connected ? Perhaps the recordings are not actually retained on the TV but on Sky Q ?

The recordings from the Sky Q box will be available on the new TV. If you're referring to recording made via Freeview onto a HDD connected to the TV then once you connect the HDD they should be available via the HDD input/connection.
