Moving,I have a sky dish the new home has not, but does have sky with a “socket”on wall behind tv

I am moving house, I have a sky dish, the new home has some kind of socket behind the tv with a sky (looks like a router) plugged in - I have sky Q, do you think I will need a dish or is this the new thing now and i will just need an engineer to set it up? Thank you

@Harvey22They could have had "Glass" or "Stream" which does not need a dish and works over the internet.

However if you want to take Q with you use the Sky home move service and be sure to take all the Sky equipment you have, Sky will then provide the dish and cabling to connect to your existing Q equipment, that way you will not lose any recordings you have saved in your Q box.

@Harvey22  You'll need a dish, have you booked a home move?  https://www.sky.com/help/articles/home-move-book-av2

Sky Q requires a satellite dish.  Any Sky equipment (other than a dish and related cable) left behind by a previous occupant is not yours to use and cannot be expected to function.

I did speak to the vendor she said she had a smart TV so did not need a dish? I'm not sure if we have a smart tv (how do you tell?) we have apps on it like BBC IPlayer, ITVX, NETFLIX etc but these do not come up when you put the tv on - you have to scroll to find them

By definition if it has on-board apps then it's a smart TV.  That by itself can't get you Sky channels though.

Thank you, I just wondered if it was a smart TV I have, perhaps I could (with skys permission and and engineer) attached to the "socket" (what ever that is) one can only think its fibre?

Not really, no, because that connection (assuming it's actually live) is not 'yours' if you aren't either paying a direct broadband subscription to an ISP or a charge levied by the building owners for such a service.

If the "socket" is on a router then the router will likely be turned off and will be useless because the service it provides will have been paid for by the previous owner of the property. If it's a Sky router then it will likely need to be returned to Sky, but that is the previous owner's problem.

In any case, if you have Sky Q and are mid-contract you will need to inform Sky of your home move and they will fit a new dish and cabling to allow your TV service to continue. If you want to switch to Sky Stream, the alternative Sky TV service which is delivered without a dish, entirely via broadband, then you'll need to make sure you are paying for a fast and stable broadband connection at the new property and also alert Sky that this is what you wish to do. They will let customers switch from Q to Stream mid-contract onto a new 18 month Stream contract, but please do some research first. Sky Stream is a very different type of service to Sky Q which does not record in the same sense as Q.

It would perhaps help if you posted a picture of this.

Is Sky currently your ISP at your present address?

I wish I would have taken a picture when first viewing - the new home is too far away to "pop" back again - but yeah in hind sight it would have been good to have a picture of the "socket" but going on answers so far it looks like (of course I will do the home move thing with sky) I will need a new dish fitted for my sky Q to work - thats fine 🙂

Yeah good advice, thank you. I think I will get a dish fitted via sky home move - any ideas what the home move cost is - I think its around £50? Also anyone know how long before sky come and connect you? Hope its not too long - I use internet everyday 🙂

@Harvey22

The Home Move is free (apart from weekend appointments).  Q installation timescale is down to local installer availability: broadband activation by Openreach is a separate process and has a minimum ten working day lead time from point of booking.
