Going to keep this brief .. I've been in IT support for almost 35 years so i've a reasonable grasp on what settings I have the ability to change.
1. Rreset both boxes. they refuses to get a DHCP address if you connect them by cable and if you use WIFI, it goes around and around and sometimes will connect but mostly not.
2. Rest BT Router and BT WIFI discs - no faults
3. Every other device on the network works faultlessly.
4. Sky2TB box is as hot as the sun - particularly the hard drive. Blown it through with compressed air and had a look inside using a probe camera, it's as clean as a whistle - no dust. Doesn't sound like the fan is doing much anymore, it turns freely.
5. If you assign them a permanent DHCP address on the router and then reboot them, sometimes they will connect but only via WIFI not LAN.
6. Even wired it direct to the BT router - same result - no LAN connection
7. Sky man came out a while back and fitted a Sky Booster - not sure that actually does anything other than clutter up the house and add yet another WIFI signal to the mix.
Can't work out what the issue is with it and there's almost NO settings to tinker with. Doesn't matter if you turn off the WIFI via secret meu 001. It just refuses to play ball. Will not get a DHCP address, even if you give it a static address it refuses to see the router or the internet. Sometimes it will see the router and will flicker to seeing the internet but that's literally for seconds.
Seems like this is not an uncommon problem - is it just time for new hardware and if so, who pays for them?
Cheers,
Patrick

Sky replaces Q hardware free of charge for customers who have an ongoing content subscription, because it's all on loan.

Cheers - think i'll just push for that tbh, the current stuff must be 3 maybe 4 years old.
