Is sky Q and sky boxes in general eventually going to be obsolete?

Isn't going to happen.  Cost and reliability for starters.

Rewinding and FFwing video streams is still a miserable experience in 2025.

Easily skipping through content, especially adverts, makes Sky Q a dream to use.

Very few of the currently orbiting platforms are television broadcast satellites: the vast majority are doing internet and other communication, GPS, earth observation and military tasks.  A satellite built for those purposes cannot be used by Sky any more than the average car makes a good boat.

Dear Mr. O’Brien,

Thank you for your message and for being a valued Sky customer since 2006. Your loyalty and feedback are greatly appreciated.

I’d like to reassure you that Sky remains fully committed to delivering the best possible viewing experience for all our customers. Last year, we renewed our contract with SES to continue providing satellite capacity for Sky Q in the UK and Ireland through at least 2029. Sky Q remains an integral part of our service, and we know it is highly valued by our customers. We are also conscious of the broadband issues you raise and appreciate that it would be in neither of our interests to not be in a position to offer you a service that works for your needs. 

Regarding recording on Sky Glass, I can assure you that we are continually enhancing our IP-based products to replicate and in many cases enhance the traditional recording experience.. Our personal playlist feature now allows customers to easily save and access their favorite shows, movies, and sports across live TV, apps, and on-demand content—ensuring nothing is missed.

We truly appreciate your support and hope to continue serving you as a valued Sky customer for many years to come.

Perhaps interesting to note that 4th February 2029 will be the 40th anniversary of the launch of Sky Television itself.

In 2029 Sky Streaming will be about as old as Sky Q is now and as a maturer product might be a different proposition.

You seem a nice guy, I think people on here just got a bit frustrated with saying the same thing going round in circles 😄 and it was the same thing that Sky told you but you found their tone more reassuring which I can understand.

I somewhat share your concern and I don't want to see the end of satellite broadcasting here either but we just live in a world of constant change and the streaming quality delivered by apple tv / netflix / Prime is somewhat reassuring.

As much as I despair of Musk as a human being, Starlink delivers very impressive broadband anywhere in UK & Ireland even if the ground based infrastructure in your local street hasn't been upgraded by the time we all have to move.

Hello there Derek Michael O’Brien here again I've been thinking about this and I'm sorry it's just how I feel. I know I've expressed it many times before and you've given me your opinions but I still think that instead of bringing out another smart TV like the latest sky glass Second generation sky should focus on bringing out another set top box similar to sky Q at least for the remaining couple of years until the change over happens I accept that the inevitable will happen but in the meantime I think there is too much emphasis put on smart TV options and Wi-Fi only TV options fair enough we can't change the situation but at least for the next couple of years there should be a mix of both sky glass second generation what about bringing out a sky? Q second generation? Does anyone else agree with me on this? Just looking for opinions? That's all I know we can change the situation I'm just curious does anyone feel the same as me? Should there be a sky Q second generation box at least for the next couple of years five at least We're only giving opinions here. It may never happen but I'm just wondering does anyone agree with me? Please get back with your thoughts.

Sky Glass if you want a TV with Sky streaming inside and Stream if you want to add it to your current TV.

Whilst many would like an upgraded Q it just isn't going to happen.
