Intermittently can't change channel

Hi

My sky q box has been playing up over the last few days. At times it refuses to change channels with the screen just going blank. At other times it can take 30 seconds or so to change, just sitting there on the original channel.  The menu system is still working 

 and allows me to try and select another channel, but nothing is happening on the back end. I tried to record a film earlier which locked the channel and didn't write anything to the HDD. I'm just trying now to access recordings on the drive and it's extremely slow to respond, the recordings either won't play, stutter, and often fail.

I've tried a system reset using the 0 0 1 on the setup menu, but it's had no effect.

Any ideas? Is the HDD failing? If so, I don't understand how that would affect the live channels. I don't really want to lose the recordings as it years worth of our favourite films etc.
