Installation of SkyQ

My dish is on my Chimney, to access you need a roof ladder , will Sky replace the dish & LNB or would it be to dangerous for the Engineer to access, I am asking as Sky have offered me free upgrade to SkyQ from Sky+

Thanks

Typically chimney mounts are no longer considered appropriate, and a Sky installer won't attempt to reach it to swap the LNB out.

@sallirb The fact that it's on the chimney suggests that at the time it was installed there was nowhere else to put it. If that's (still) the case, then you may have problems getting Sky Q installed.

Re: Installation of SkyQ

I live in a bungalow, the dish is on the chimney. The Sky Engineer turned up, took one look and said "I can't reach the dish as it is a health and saftey issuse"

His van was equiped with a tripple extension ladder and a roof ladder, why carry them if you not allowed to use.

I hadto wait 3 weeks for a date, I took a day off work for this work, nothing achieved no phone call back from Sky Installation dept. A total waste of time and energy.

I only renewed my contract as I was getting Sky Q!!!!!!!

You have to tell them before but no one knows so it's a mess. Get an independent contractor to fit the wideband LNB.

Re: Installation of SkyQ

Thanks for the reply, once the LNB has been installed, will that work on the old Sky+ box as It taakes 3 weeks for a sky engineer to turn up. What a complete mess

Need a hybrid one for that. And run two pairs of cables.

You may wish to read some notes I have made for people considering switching from SKY +/HD to SKY Q

Re: Installation of SkyQ

Thanks for the info. It seams too much hassel to me. If Sky employ "Engineers" to instal their equipment then balk at climbing ladders to a bungalow roof to change an LNB is ridiculous.

To hide behind Health and Safety is a non starter as an indenpant contractor would have to adhere to the same ledgislation

H&S policy rather than legislation. I agree but it ain't my company.

@Biggles17 Have you spoken to Sky since to see what they suggest to solve this issue?

Nope: the safe working practice defined by any particular company can be (and typically should be) significantly stricter than the minimum which any relevant legislation requires: it's the company which ends up paying employee and customer compensation bills for one thing.  If an independent contractor chooses to operate under conditions (and take risks) which Sky does not permit then that's up to them: for a Sky employee to do so is a disciplinary offence.

@Biggles17 Just be aware that even if you employ an independant engineer to change the LNB Sky can and have refused to install Sky Q, This is due to any future service/faults visits Sky engineers would still not be able to reach the dish.

I think you'd want to

and with their penchant for moving everyone to internet based services, I can imagine they are less keen than ever to be flexible

Re: Installation of SkyQ

I'm not going to bother with an upgrade as the only viable location for the dish is the chinney stack. As installed by Sky everal years ago. Whenthe sky+ box fails it will be decision time to stay or go
