I don't want to do this but I'm having full fibre installed tomorrow and at the moment I don't have any spare Ethernet ports! So I want to free one up by a wireless connection. What is the best step by step way of doing this?

Hi @white-cross
Carry out a Network reset on the Q box with the Ethernet cable removed.
Network Reset found in Q box Home - Settings - Setup - Network.
Highlight Status and then select Reset on the right hand side. Follow instructions to connect by WiFi to your router. Even if reset is not listed there is still an option to connect by WiFi to Sky or 3rd party router
As you are on Sky Broadband you will be asked to press the WPS button on the Sky router. (Not on the Q box as the Network reset will start the main Q box WPS automatically). Make sure you press the WPS button on the Sky router and not the reset button.

Hi @oldfella
Thanks for this. I'm leaving everything as it is until the sky guy arrives tomorrow. Then I'll set to work
Thanks again

Re: How to switch from wired to wireless connection between sky q box and sky broadband router
Hi again @oldfella I've had another thought. I just need a device to make 2 Ethernet ports from one. I've heard about Ethernet splitters and switches. Could these be a better solution? If so, what's the difference between the two? And I don't want anything that needs power. An actual recommendation would be excellent!

You need a hub but will require some power. I got a cheap 4 port one off Amazon which is USB powered (from the Sky box itself)

Hi @white-cross
you need a simple Unmanaged Ethernet switch.
NETGEAR 5 Port Gigabit Network Switch (GS105) - Ethernet Splitter - Ethernet Switch -

Hi @white-cross
you need a simple Unmanaged Ethernet switch
This is what I've used - works perfectly to drive to Q mini's (powered by the USB on one): https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0BD7SS75S

Re: How to switch from wired to wireless connection between sky q box and sky broadband router
@white-cross As mentioned just get a small 5 port unmanaged switch. Likes of netgear and TP link will do them for around the £20 or so mark. Just make sure it is a switch (not a splitter) and second make sure it is unmanaged. Q has history of not working right with managed switches, not sure if it is still an issue but just get an unmanaged.

Yeah, thanks for helpful replies. I've got the wireless connection working, and yet another box of tricks and more cables fills me with horror!

Hi @white-cross
When all boxes are connected by Ethernet you can then switch off all Q box WiFi.
However as you are on Sky Broadband you could try leaving it all on as the boxes will be WiFi hotspots for other devices.
If you then find any issues and want to turn off the box WiFi follow the procedure below.
Start with main Q box and first carry out a Network reset with the Ethernet connected.
Network Reset found in Q box Home - Settings - Setup - Network.
Highlight Status and then select Reset on the right hand side. Select connect wired to non Sky Router (or Sky router if on Sky Broadband). Do not carry out any WPS and just wait for the box to connect. It may take a couple of minutes. If it does not connect there is an issue with the Ethernet connection.
Immediately it connects go into the Q box hidden menu and turn off WiFi.
To enter hidden menu press Home and navigate down to Settings but do not select Settings.
With Settings highlighted press 0 0 1 Select.
Go to Network to turn off both bands of WiFi. Confirm before exit.
Repeat the network reset on any minis in the Mini Home menu with the Ethernet connected. Again do not do any WPS and just wait for it to connect.
Once it is connected go immediately into the mini hidden menu (same procedure as above) and turn off both bands of WiFi. Confirm before exit.
