Hisense qled TV poor picture quality in SkyQ UHD

I have a Hisense 43" QLED TV - 43E7KQTUK, primarily bought to enjoy movies and sports in UHD.

I have never been able to get an acceptable picture. As soon as I select a UHD channel the picture dims and becomes murky. Sometimes facial features look cartoon-like with no definition.  I can get an acceptable picture by dropping from 10 bit to 8 bit, but then I lose my full UHD.

@StubbsyJ  What you're seeing is the TV's low nit not displaying HDR correctly.

It's not a box issue but the TV itself not being able to show HDR with enough brightness.

And a screen of that size, unless your sat right on top of it, isn't going to give you the best experience for UHD, for that a bigger screen with a higher nit would give a better experience, but that all comes at a cost.

You're muddling UHD and HDR.

UHD is the picture resolution (4K) and remains the same in 8 or 10 bit.

For HDR you need 10bit (and a compatible Q box) but as noted the set has a peak of 250nits which is not sufficient to display HDR properly.

The sets own apps may be better calibrated for such a low peak.

That model has a peak brightness of 250 nits, which is really low by contemporary standards.

Even the Glass Gen 1 manages 400+ and it's not exactly an outstanding performer.

As others have pointed out, just because a TV is labelled as having HDR , it doesn't automatically mean that it's any good at showing it. 

Keep your Q box on 2160P 8bit and just enjoy the UHD resolution. 

HDR only really improves things on much more expensive TVs with a high peak brightness and multiple local dimming zones (on an LCD panel) or a top-end OLED.
