We are renting a room for a few months and wonder if we can take one of our exisitng sky q boxes and simply plug it in?

No it needs the Q
and that needs the dish
you can take Sky Go on a tablet though and use hdmi from that

And Sky boxes can only be used at the account address as per the T's and C's you agreed to.
