HOW DO I BRING UP NEWS/SPORTS 'TEXT' UPDATES ON SKY Q?

Good morning.

As of yesterday, my family have switched from 3 x SKY+ HD boxes to 1 x SKY Q box and 2 mini's.

(The Sky account is in my name, I'm the account holder)

I've been asked by both parents, how do they pull up 'on-screen' News and Sports Teams results whilst they're watch something on the tv?

I didn't understand what they meant, so I had them give me a clearer picture on what they were talking about. They've explained that they want to see the on-screen, live text updates, of incoming news stories and Sports team score results as they come in, on the tv screen, which they used to press the [ TEXT ] button on the Sky+HD remote for.

(I've attached a photo showing exactly what I'm talking about)

They explained that it was like you see at the bottom of the Sky News channel screen and also on the Sky Sport News screen, whereby you have the moving line of text with story headlines / Sports score results running across, but this used to be able to be seen on a normal channel by pressing the button marked TEXT on the old remote.

(THEY AREN'T TALKING ABOUT SUBTITLES OR AUDIO DESCRIPTIONS, SADLY.)

Thank you for your help. This was a function they were actively using at the time the Sky engineer arrived to upgrade the setup, so it's a current, acting function.

@Moogle+Knight

As indicated above, BBC 'text' service disappeared from the Q platform in late 2019 with a firmware update, as the first step in removing it universally.  The subsequent outcry caused the withdrawal from other platforms to be suspended but it didn't return to Q (and frankly this was never adequately explained)

You can't do quite the same thing. Try the red button. Honestly no idea what is being broadcast by the BBC on there these days though.

Can I suggest the LiveScore or FlashScore apps (if it's football they're interested in)

Or FollowScores is a bit less stat-heavy

hi @Moogle+Knight

Unfortunately the BBC red button text facility was never implemented on SKY Q

When SKY Q was designed the BBC was due to phase out the text system on all platforms but that decision got reversed  after feedback etc. and did continue on legacy systems but newer platforms never implemented it.

Thus, I am afraid, they will have to use PCs/Tablets/mobile phones etc  to access such data

Hi @Moogle+Knight   Try the side menu (. . .) button. Unfortunately that is all that is available on Sky Q. If they have a dumb TV, no Internet connection, then teletext (or whatever it is called nowadays) should be available.

unfortunately I don't think  this is as good as it was since the revamp of the SKY Sports app last year - although it might help slightly

I believe the older SKY Sports app that was accessed through this, used to carry results info that is either not there or difficult to find in the new version of the app that is more geared to providing more streams and clips of highlights etc

(As I didn't use the old version of the app I have no idea how much info there was but I know we got posts from those who used that info and were disappointed that they lost it)

The BBC wanted to close down their Text service several years ago. They have stopped launching it on newer platforms so it is gradually becoming less and less available giving them another reason to close it.
