Ethernet connected mini box isn’t providing WiFi
Hi, my sky mini box is hard wired from the Hub in the house out to the garden room. We recently changed our broadband provider from Sky to Virgin Media. I've just noticed, although the Sky Box is connected to the internet, I can watch the box etc (settings all fine etc). There is now no WiFi produced from the mini box for my garden room in the Garden Room. Any ideas why? It worked perfectly when I was with Sky Broadband. Any ideas how to fix? Thanks

Re: Ethernet connected mini box isn’t providing WiFi
With SKY broadband the mini boxes automatically act as wifi Hotspots
When your broadband is not SKY then you have to turn on a setting on the main box (it is on or off for all boxes) - it is off by default
It is in :
Home - Settings - Setup - Network - Advanced Settings called wifi Hotspots

Re: Ethernet connected mini box isn’t providing WiFi
Thank you.
the sky mini box in the garden room is hard wired because it's far from the main hub, is there is no way I can carry on using the cable and still use WiFi in the house? The WiFi from the house won't connect to the sky box out there, it's too far away...thanks again

Maybe you have misunderstood me - whilst the setting is on the main box it activiates all the boxes as hotspots so it will activate the wifi hotspot on the mini as well as on the main box
That said to use the mini using ethernet the main box must also be connected via ethernet- is this the case ?

Re: Ethernet connected mini box isn’t providing WiFi
Ok thanks
The main box isn't currently Ethernet, but I can connect via Ethernet (I can use the old sky cable into the Virgin box). But I have another mini box upstairs in a bedroom, that's connected via WiFi with no cable (and no way of getting a cable to it)

Hi @Moggie+Moo
To be able to use the mini via ethernet, it & the main box must both be connected via ethernet - either directly box to box or via the router or an unmanaged switch
Now, this is where my knowledge is a lttle lacking.
I think - but I am not sure - that you may be able to continue to use the mini indoors via wifi (but it will use a wifi signal generated by the main box & not your wifi)

Re: Ethernet connected mini box isn’t providing WiFi
@Moggie+MooThe reason for it not working with Virgin is that the connection methods are different between Sky and 3rd party suppliers.
Sky uses both frequencies of your home WiFi however with other providers the boxes generate their own link on 5Ghz nothing to do with your home WiFi so if you are using Ethernet you have to either link box to box or take them all back to your router so they all have a physical connection to each other.
Hotspots should still work but only if you enable them and then only on 2.4Ghz.

Re: Ethernet connected mini box isn’t providing WiFi
I am singularly unable to find "turn on hotspots" under advanced settings on either the mini box or the main Sky Q box. The only option is to change a MAC address? I wonder what I am doing wrong.

hi @redsandero
Is your home wifi SKy - If it is then it is always on as all SKY Q boxes form part of the wifi Mesh and is not an option
