Do I need my SKY booster box now?

Hi all.

I have SKY Q and, until recently, Multiscreen (with just one extra box). The installer (years ago)  installed the main SKY Q box (next to my telly in the lounge), the 'satelite' multiscreen box (next to the telly in the bedroom) and a 'booster box' next to my BT Smart Hub 2. I now don't have multiscreen, just the SKY Q box in the lounge. Do I need the booster box. I assume the wifi connection for the main TV is currently connected to the booster box which is next to my router.  Can I connect the SKY Q box wirelessly to the router and scrap the 'booster'. The booster takes up an ethernet port on my router that I want to use for something else.

Thanks for reading.

Steve

If you don't have Sky Broadband and no longer have a mini box, the booster is no longer needed. For non Sky Broadband customers it only boosts the signal between the main and mini box, so without a mini box it has no purpose.

Hi @SjH55

You could try disconnecting the booster and resetting the main Q box connection.

First reset your broadband router.
On 3rd party broadband and your router does not have a reset button, reboot it by disconnecting the power lead for 30 secs and then reconnecting.
Wait until the router is completely back and running and then try a Network Reset found in Q box Home - Settings - Setup - Network.
Highlight Status and then select Reset on the right hand side. Follow instructions to connect by WiFi to your router. Even if reset is not listed there is still an option to connect by WiFi to Sky or 3rd party router
On 3rd party (non Sky ) broadband then you need to enter the SSID and password for the router 2.4 Ghz WiFi band.

Re: Do I need my SKY booster box now?

Hi - thanks for that amazingly quick reply !!

I am happy to go through that process - if I do that and attempt to link the SKY Q box to my router wirelessly via SSID/password etc - if it doesn't work for any reason, can I reconnect to the 'Booster'? Should I take the network settings from the SKY Q before I start in case I need to revert?

Tks.

Hi @SjH55

Yes if you cannot get a Good connection by WiFi to the router then you can reconnect the booster by Ethernet to your router and reconnect on the main Q box by using WPS as follows.

Carry out a Network Reset found in Q box Home - Settings - Setup - Network.
Highlight Status and then select Reset on the right hand side. Follow instructions to connect by WiFi to Sky booster.     You will be asked to press the WPS button on the nearest Q device ie the booster.  (Not on the Q box as the Network reset will start the main Q box WPS automatically).

It can be connected to the BT router by Ethernet @xenon81  @SjH55

Advantage being that the Main Q box can then connect to it by WPS.

Definitely don't 'scrap' it: boosters are loaned against each account and you're financially liable for its safekeeping.

Re: Do I need my SKY booster box now?

Hi all

Thanks for all those prompt and helpful replies. I have disconnected the booster and reconnected the SKY Q box wirelessly to the router and all works fine. I will keep the booster in case SKY want it back. Out of interest, is the booster any use generally or is it config'd specifically for the task of linking a mini disc to the router?

Thanks again to all.

SjH

It only connects to sky boxes (and if backed by ethernet then to anything on the other end of that, your router in this case)
