Connecting Sky box to sky mini hard wired only

Yes, I am aware that there a loads of discussions on this matter, but I am moving out of parents house and disconnecting the broadband. My parents don't use broadband. I see a lot of comments on other posts about routers and what not, but I just want to make it as simple as possible for my parents (i'll be doing all the work in fixing this) as they are not techinal at all.

There will be no router in the house either. Is it possible to just hard wire the sky q box to the sky mini via a cat 5/6/7/8 cable? The distance is about 5 meters between where the two boxes will be. I have watched a few videos on Youtube but they keep mentioning routers or IP addressess.

If anybody has done this, I would be grateful for your input and how you solved this.

That won't be viable long term. They need an internet connection. Q uses it to verify their subscription I believe.

@SCOBYOBRIEN While the main Sky Q box will work without an internet connection, albeit with limited functionality, ie no Apps, Downloads or Catch Up, I don't believe the Sky Q Mini Box will.

Well, yes, because communication between main Q box and Q Mini uses TCP/IP and so each unit having a viable IP address is essential.  Normally that's handled by the router through its DHCP service: I guess in theory it may be possible to hard-set compatible IP addresses on the boxes through their individual network configuration screens, but I don't recall anyone posting to say they had done so successfully.

Thanks for the reply. Shame that technology has gone this far that you cannot have a stand alone unit with an add on, but understand the reasons why.
