In which case all I can suggest is to try another optical cable - I doubt both the TV and SKY Q box are not outputting a signal

As an aside, please may I ask what the make & model of your Stereo is

I really appreciate your help, the stereo is a sony micro hi fi component system cmt cp11, is a brand new optical cable?

Ah - reading the manual - the optical connection on your Stereo is an output not input

I think you may need to get an optical to analogie converter  (or an HDMI audio extracter) if you want to use your Stereo

Look at the following link - you may want to search elsewhere for Optical to RCA converter

You will see it takes an optical input and provides analogue outputs as needed by your Stereo 

Note  : This model (and many others require a USB power supply)

BTW I have no personal experience of these units and thus cannot give any reference for this or others

• If I get the convertor do I need any other cables? Just the optical cable? & do I put the optical cable in sky box still and settings the same? Bring back the days when you used to have to get up to turn tv over 🤔 sorry being needy.

The optical cable from the SKY box into the converter then RCA (aka Phono) lead from the converter to your Stereo

(setting on SKY Q set to Normal as before)

Depending on which converter you get you may need a sparate power supply or it may come with one or it may come with a USB power cable needing a suitable outlet / socket or adapter
