Cant work out if my Sky boxes are using their ethernet connection

I have a Sky Q and 3 sky mini all conencted by ethernet.  I have aswithc and all ethernet cable run to the switch and from the switch to my router.  I then have a cable formt he switch running to a TPLink Mesh wifif that is my house wifi (the router wifi is too weak) However when i looked at the network set up it said the name of my wifi.

I turned off my wifi and went threough a reset no every box and instead of my wifi name I saw some other bunch of letter which i assumed now meat it was on ethernet.  I put my wifif back on and when I went back to the first TV it had switch back to my wifi name (so not some SKY wifi, my house wifi).  After a bit of googling i went round every box and did the old 001 and turned off thew wifi on every box. However same thnig, reset everything, saw the non house wifif name and when I came back to the begining it was back on my house wifi.  i have rechecked and all boxes wfifi is of on both channels.

However isnt the wifi setting on the boxes a broadcast cast?  The question whetrher my boxes are actually using the thernet and just random bug showing my wifi name or are they still jumping back on wifi. The signial is definately a bit twitchy aroudn the house. If they are jumping back on the wifi how can I stop this permananetly?   Thanks any advice

In short, you can't.  In my experience I found the WiFi would turn itself back on when it felt like it.

I had my Q's connected via ethernet to local mesh nodes but have reverted to WiFi as they can cause disruptive traffic on a shared network.  (It was rather bizarre as my car regularly refused to charge when the Q boxes were on the same network - after removing them the problem disappeared)

Bear in mind Q was designed over 10 years ago when such technology wasn't mainstream.

Re: Cant work out if my Sky boxes are using their ethernet connection

Well I might be ok. I went on the main box and one of the sky mini and got the ip address and the MAC address.   Looking on my router those ip addresses say conenction is wired.  It seems all my wired conenctions are 192.123.1.xxx  and wifi wifi 192.123.68.xxx.

Weirdly the MAC address are sort of correct in that the sky bx lists 3 MAC address, 2.4Ghz, 5Ghz and therenet. Its none of those!!!!  It the same except last 2 digits which vary for each conenctioin and my router has a different 2 digits!!!

So on the basis tha tthe ip address being reported by the box is reported as woired by my router i'm going to assume it is using the ethernet and name appearing in the setup is just a complete red herring.

If any one can confrm that would be great.

Re: Cant work out if my Sky boxes are using their ethernet connection

off that I just checked my phones IP address which is under 192.123.68.xxx so wifi and that says wired as well!!!  Assume that is because the mesh is wired. Not very helpful.

So question is does the 1 in 192.123.1 mean its wired and 192.123.68 mean its wifi?

Yup, it does some wacky stuff with virtual MAC addresses.
