As my sky remote stopped working many months ago, I have to use my mobile to turn channels over. I for some reason can no longer connect to it and programs are not recording

If your Sky Q remote is definitely broken/faulty , if you follow this link it should allow you to do some troubleshooting and then send you to a form to request a replacement (this is not available for ROI customers).

Otherwise you can purchase a new one from a lot of retailers / main supermarkets.

I didn't think I needed to buy a new one as I could use my mobile instead

There is no app you can install on your mobile that will let you operate your Sky Q box.
