Unfortunately it seems to have been a concious decision by SKY to always show the Home screen and not allow direct resumption of live TV. This is so they can highlight content they want to.
There have been various requests over the years, often from people in a similar siatuation to your family but no change forthcoming (which bearing in mind the above I don't think we expected)
SKY Q now only gets limited updates and all SKY's efforts are in their Stream & Glass products
