Hi all,
Something is bugging me and I need some of you legends to stop my head overthinking things.
New ISP,Community Fibre, connected a few days ago so new router and 2 nodes installed, working great. All phones, tablets, laptops,Alexa,Ring doorbell,PS5 connected easily.
old ISP,BT was left running and the only devices connected to it were the Q main and mini box which ran great after weeks of aggro so l left them as it was for a few days of peace and quiet from the kids moaning.
Today was shut down day for BT so this afternoon, thanks to Community Fibre who placed the router and one node right next door to the main box and one mini we have I could finally use Ethernet to connect both.
I connected the cable from main box to Community Fibre router, then network reset, connect via wired connection, and it connected in milliseconds.Up the stairs to mini box, connected to node, same process as before, then it started on the step 2,3,4 process and connecting by wps to main box which connected to network but mini couldn't see main.Reactivated mini and thankfully it connected.
Here is my problem or is it?
While all of this was going on the BT router was still on,was this a mistake, forgot to pull the plug on it when starting the new connection.but didn't think anything of it until a while ago when checking network setup on the main box and to my surprise it's saying connected to the BT router and advanced settings say the same static IP that it always had with BT.
Have i done something wrong or is it Sky Q just being Sky Q.Both boxes have been fine for 8 hours by the way.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreIf that static IP (static being the operative word, it won't change by itself) is on the same subnet that the new router also uses - quite possible since most use 192.168.1.x - then yeah it'll carry on working as long as the dhcp scope on the new router doesn't overlap and it tries to assign that address to a new device one day.
ignore what the Q calls the network it's attached to, it's nonsense.

A few problems since Saturdays switch of Sky to Community Fibre from BT.
Had a few instances of disconnections of the nodes, only lasting 2 minutes at the most.Unfortunately the one node in sons bedroom has the sky mini connected as mentioned in original post plus his PS5 also wired,so severe meltdowns ensue until it reconnects a minute later, the other one is in the kitchen for coverage.
Is it mesh systems clashing?
The other one is sons mini box won't download any Sky on demand content but apps,Netflix,Disney plus are fine.On the main box a 1 hour download of The Professionals on ITV 4 took 25 minutes when I thought hardwired on 1gb speed would take a few minutes.
Son is spouting about changing DNS settings on sky box but I have no idea what he's talking about.
Thinking about ringing Sky or Community fibre but not sure which one as I don't know where the problem lies and who would be best to fix it.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreIt won't run at 1Gb. Sky's content servers have no interest in giving you that speed plus the hard drive probably isn't fast enough to write that quickly. But I get a 2 hour UHD movie in 15-20 minutes.
sky go can download fast though.
Short lived disconnects are hard to diagnose. Turn off wifi on all the sky boxes if possible in case of frequency clash.
DNS (using google or cloudflare's) worth a try but I doubt it will help much. 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1
The mini can't download anyway, it gets downloades by the Q. But what happens if a download is initiated from it?

@Chodley WiFi is off mate on both boxes, not sure if the mini in my sons bedroom is giving any message, just taking his word for it as a good dad does, happened when I was at work conveniently,he's autistic so everything is a major crisis no matter how small.Researched the google DNS settings but being 58 years old have a bit of a fear of changing anything in case it brings the whole lot down and more meltdowns.By the way no disconnections today although been at work all day but he hasn't moaned and you can't stand and stare at the nodes all day can you😀 What happens if you change the DNS settings,do I have to do it on both boxes or just the main?Would I notice anything or is it wait and see.
Thanks for your reply much appreciated.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreDo it on all of them. You can always change it back to automatic (which means it uses your router as its DNS which then passes the request to your ISP's actual DNS)
personally I don't think it will solve your symptoms but it won't make it any worse either (DNS lookups are only done each time an unfamilar hostname needs to be resolved to an IP address and then get cached for hours or days so it's not likely that a poor DNS service would cause random disconnects)

@Chodley Thanks for the info mate, will give it a go,actually been 48hrs without a dropout i think,we'll no one has seen any flashing red lights to my knowledge, downloads are painfully slow on main box still but I can cope with that.
Cheers
