Bit of a long one.
So my old TV has been going for a while, edge light. HD.
I have been getting blocky images only when dark to medium grey scenes are on show on screen in both HD and SD, obviously the SkyQ box tries to push it out 1080p. (it's set at 1080p in the settings)
I have a good signal coming in 90.
It's as if it's a low quality image.
Because my screen is going, I am getting slight banding, which may be one of the reasons for my problem.... I thought.
I took delivery of a Samsung QE55QN95D 4K NEO QLED last week, I know it's a bit of a VA panel lottery now, but when I ran a banding test, It didn't have any banding, and the DES (dirty screen effect) was minimal, yet when I watched the sky channels through it, it was the same as my old TV, which was strange since I had run the tests through YouTube.
I went out and bought some new HDMI 2.1 cables on the off chance.
I don't subscribe to the HD pack, The only HD we get is the BBC etc.
I don't have anything else I could try like a games console etc to test the TV.
So anyway, I returned the new TV and exchanged it for another, I do have slight DSE on it....but again the images are still the same.
I have tried every setting on the TV as I can, everything turned off, so no forced possessing.
Is it possible for a SkyQ box to push out a weak, low quality picture?
Normal scenes are fine, but as soon as there's a grey in it, you can see it.
Here's an extreme photo (extreme) It's a girl in a cave. All the settings have been pushed to the max, so that it really stands out so you can see it, obviously as you turn the settings down back no normal, a lot of it fades into the background, but you can still see it in some areas.
It's still obviously there when a bright/normal scene is on show, you just can't see it .
The exit of the cave daylight, fine, grey area inside the cave, rubbish, and it's like that if for example it's some scene of a sitting room. People, furniture are fine, but any grey area in it like a door or wall, it stands out. On all channels, not just one or two.
I thought it maybe standing out more on the new TVs because of the upscaling to near 4k.
So, could it be the SKyQ box?
Thanks for any replies.
Remember, the image settings have been pushed to the max, just so it shows up really well in the photo.

Hi,
Sorry I missed it because I had to do some other bits and bobs.
The chat bubble should still be there (more info the link that @Greenfingers001 gave)
If you are using Safari I believe you must make sure that 'Hide IP address' is not checked in settings to be able to see it - if you have difficulty finding that setting then may be try accessing here with another browser

I would expect it on SD. It's hideously compressed and any artefacts get magnified by the box and the TV having to scale it up by an effective factor of ~30x
Turning the brightness down so dark areas blend together might be your best option.
To be honest, testing for panel manufacturing imperfections when using SD is a bit like putting up an umbrella after fallling in the canal 😉

Yes, on channels like BBC news HD etc.
My old TV was just an old HD one, which I have tried as I still have it, as well as my replacement 4k.
I can only test another skyq box, and go from there.

So will I 😅
I'll get back to this thread and let you know.

Even though I'm streaming it through the YouTube app on the TV? and the test is in HD?
The tests I am using are the ones recommended on 'AV Forums'

YouTube in an on-board television app can have nothing to do with a Q television box.

Well just that if you're going to watch SD, the kinds of issues that test is designed to uncover will pale into insignificance versus the shocking overall picture quality.
HD is also pretty heavily compressed on Q (plus LCD/LED TVs are not so great at dark shadow transitions and even on my OLED there are sometimes visible compression blocking artefacts). You might find streaming via iPlayer gives better results.

I was using various banding tests through the TVs YouTube app for banding /dse tests so I could possibly rule out that it may have been a crappy panel with banding which was causing the effect as through the TVs app, it would have been coming down my internet connection, not the SkyQ.

The engineer has been, he said something about software, which I didn't quite catch (I know that doesn't help much).
Anyway, he swapped the SkyQ box over for a new one, and *touch wood, all seems well.
Hopefully, happy days.
I'd like to thank everyone who gave advice and links etc.
While we were chatting, he did mention that Some TVs aren't compatible with the box for some reason, he said he has been to a couple of Sharp TVs that aren't.
He only mentioned Sharp.
