My dad has recently passed away and we have cancelled sky q as my mum did not watch sports and cannot pay for extras. She still has sky broadband. As we have to return the box we tried to put her old Humax box in but as sky q uses nlb it won't work so she has no ordinary tv. What can we do? Can we make a one off payment to buy the old sky q box rather than return it so she can still watch tv or can someone change the bit on the sky dish for her?
Thanks for your help

@GMB If you decide on a Freesat 4K receiver and it initially reports no satellite transponder signal when you power it up, I found this advice on their website, for owners having initial problems when using a Wideband LNB, they suggest you update the software;
Freesat 4K Boxes receive software updates and install them automatically whilst in standby. You can update your software by carrying out the following simple steps:
- Check that both your satellite cables are connected to the box. (RF IN 1 & RF IN 2)
- Ensure your box is plugged in and keep the power supply connected to the box.
- Leave the box switched ON for 30 minutes.
- After 30 minutes press the standby button on the remote control or the box to set the box to STANDBY mode. Please do not remove power supply to the box.
- Wait 10 seconds and press the standby button again to switch ON your device. The box may show a loading screen. Wait for this to finish and then complete the on-screen instructions to set up the box.
- If after the setup of your device regional channels are not available such as BBC One on 101 and ITV/STV/UTV on 103, go to “Home” on your remote control then select “settings”. From “settings” select “Freesat channels” and then “Begin channel scan”. Follow the on-screen instructions entering your postcode when requested to restore your local channels.
Whenever this has failed to resolve the problem, several new owners have reported that it updated itself when it was just left powered in 'standby' overnight.

Afraid you can't buy the Sky box as they are only loaned to you. Yes you can get the LNB replaced with a version that your Humax box will work with, a local satellite installer will be able to sort this for you.

hi @GMB
Although I am not sure which would be cheaper - the new Freesat 4K boxes will also work with the Wideband LNB that SKY Q uses (although sometimes it can take a bit of a procedure for them to work - there is a discussion on here with details if needed)

Re: Bereavement and shy q box
Note that if you acquired a Freesat 4K box and plugged it in today, they do seem to require an overnight update before actually working through a Q LNB.
