I was sent this by sky customer services which is why I believe I can copy the sky programs to a DVD Player . It does not indicate how to replay. They said:.

 I have not yet bought a DVD recorder as I am unwilling to spend money until I am reasonably sure that I will be able to replay the back up. My skybox is pretty old (5 to 6 years) and it plays through a Panasonic TV of the same age . I recently bought a Panasonic recorder but have not used it much yet. I do not think it is a mini box.

I am not been able to understand the details of your reply because I am not very technically minded. I don't understand the terms so if you could help me I would be most grateful. What is HDCP? What is macrovision. Are they a kind of encoding? I read somewhere that Sky recordings are encoded with their own encoding which can prevent replay on a non-sky device?. It that true.?

HDCP prevents you copying recordings in HD from your Sky box to a DVD recorder. You can copy most SD recordings.

Macrovision is copy protection for SD recordings,  but personally I've rarely come across recordings which are Macrovision encoded.

Recordings on Sky boxes are encrypted and cannot be played back without a Viewing Card which contains the decyption key. However that doesn't come into play when you're simply copying in real time a recording that is being played back on your Sky box.

The above link about copying refers to a Sky+ box, I don't think it works copying from SkyQ boxes unfortunately.

Do you have a SKY Hd box or SKY Q ?

When I had a SKY HD box (many years ago now) I could record most programmes I tried to a Panasonic HD/DVD recorder but it is quite possible that some were/are encrypted to prevent copying.

If you are unsure I would not invest in other equipment

Copying from SKY Q is protected via the mechanisms we mention and would need specialist knowledge/equipment to defeat it.

I can confirm that my Panasonic recorder recognised the copy protection signal from the AV output  from the Q mini and thus would not record.

Recordings are stored in Sky's own proprietry format on the hard drive but when they are output to a TV they have to be converted to a standard format for the TV (or DVD recorder) to understand.  At this point the proprietry format is irrelevant.

But this standard format can include copy protection.  (HDCP and Macrovision are both forms of copy protection)

If they are output with copy protection then you won't be able to record them using consumer hardware.

I have skyQ and a DVD recorder with hard drive.

I am able to play from the skyQ to the hard drive of the DVD recorder. Unfortunately it is not possible to buy a DVD recorder with HDMI input so you need a HDMI to SCART converter.  

A downside is you lose some PQ.

I am currently recording a TNT Sports recording of the cricket.

As for the perceived HDCP problems, I have never found a skyQ recording that I cannot copy in this way - after all I am effectively playing the skyQ recording through the DVD recorder to my TV.

I will add these ae all HD recordings on the skyQ box.

Just as an observation: that's because the body overseeing licencing of HDMI would never have granted permission for its proprietary technology to be specified in the manufacture of such a device given its intended use would be in direct contradiction to the purpose of having a high definition digital interface capable of intimately associated (though separately licenced) end-to-end encryption/copy-protection in the first place.

On my Sky+HD box the only content that I was prevented from copying to DVD was Movies. Though it has been a couple of years since I copied anything, so it may have changed.

HDCP (high definition content protection) was created to deter the creation of perfect HD copies of content. When you convert it to the far lower resolution of analogue SCART (losing fidelity as well as detail in the process) the content owners are far less concerned so they tolerate those converters effectively removing the hdcp protection.
