How do I clear this annoying HD upgrade message on BBC1? I have a Sky Q box, surely I don't need to upgrade?

Do you pay for HD (it is a chargeable extra), if not you need to look for the SD channels.

BBC One HD is a free channel - no HD subscription is required.

If it is occurring on live TV on channel 101 then may I suggest you try a restart your SKY Q box :
Use the remote to place it into standby mode
Then remove the power to it (either switch off at mains or remove the power plug)
Wait at least 30s
Then re-apply the power & wait for it to fully restart - this may take a few minutes.

Not too sure why that the case - maybe it will sort itself out.
In the meantime try channel 801

Is it? I thought you needed the HD pack to get any HD on Sky?

no, you don't need the HD add on for any FTA(free To Air) HD channels

If you are using a Sky receiver like Sky+HD / Q / Glass / Stream, BBC One HD is on channel 101 (UK) or 141 (Ireland). Are you watching BBC One on channel 801 (UK) or 832 (Ireland)?
The banner at the bottom of the screen means you're watching BBC One in SD and you need to switch to the HD version. Watching the HD version, there is no banner.
If you're watching BBC channels on the Sky Go app, the SD and HD versions are reversed for some reason and BBC One HD is on 801 (UK) / 832 (Ireland).
If you're using a Sky+ or older non-HD Sky box, you will lose all BBC channels on 8 January 2024. But you can upgrade for free (I think) to a Sky Q box to continue receiving BBC in HD. More info: https://www.sky.com/help/articles/bbcupgrade
BBC are closing all their SD channels on satellite on 8 January 2024. More info: https://rxtvinfo.com/2023/bbc-removes-sd-channels-from-freesat-list/

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreThat's true but there have been a few cases of Sky Q TV guide mistakenly showing the SD version on 101. A box full power off usually fixes it.
I'd try leaving it powered down at the wall (or pull the power lead out) all night and start it again in the morning.
is it on the latest software? (Q.230)

Yeah, you're correct. I had a quick look online and it looks like it changed at the start of the year ahead of the turning off of the SD channels from the FTA channels.

It has always been the case for Freesat channels - just like I have been able to watch them on my non SKY receiver since they began broadcasting in HD
