Re: 4K/UHD really isn't much better than HD.

on my lg 55" i see a big difference compared to hd.  i was upgraded to uhd today and totally happy that i did.  it all comes down to how your tv is configured.  have been tweaking mine for a few days now and feel that the picture looks great.

as another poster noted. HDR is a totally different ball game  if you have an enabled tv then you tube offers tons of videos in hdr.  People i have shown were literally blown away.

Because 4K is a full 4x the pixel resolution of FullHD (1920x1080 pixels)

You may want to check those numbers??

Ultra HD. 4K UHD (2160p) a resolution of 3840 pixels× 2160 lines (8.3 megapixels, aspect ratio 16:9) and the other being 8K UHD which is 7680 pixels × 4320 lines (33.2 megapixels).

Erm... that looks right to me...

1920x1080 = 2073600

3840×2160 = 8294400

8294400/2073600 = 4

Yup the maths checks out! Smiley Happy

Thanks Crunchie for th@, lost my calc.exe  ;-)

Exactly, 4k = UHD and is 4 x the resolution of HD Smiley Tongue

Re: 4K/UHD really isn't much better than HD.

UHD and 4K are not quite the same. UHD is 3840 * 2160 whereas 4K is 4096 * 2160.

So strictly speaking we don't have 4K TVs, we have UHD TVs.

Hi @Ray+P  You forgot the important word "cinema". 4K Cinema is 4096 x 2160.

I don't disagree but the point I was making is we don't have 4K TVs, we have UHD ones. Pedantic perhaps but technically correct.

Re: 4K/UHD really isn't much better than HD.

My comment about going to specsavers is not so stupid. The BBC did some test with hd to find the lowest bit rate they could get away with but the results were very unexpected. They discoved that a significant number of there testers need to go to specsavers.

For HD a person with 20/20 vision will need to sit at a distance of 3 times the height of the screen resolve each pixel. With UHD this would be 1.5 times. There are other factors that will affect percieved quality.

The compression of video signal reduces the sharpness. The BBC very low bit rates which make thier HD pictures to be inferior. So HD pictures might not be as good as they can be so UHD might look better.

There is also a filter in tv cameras that will also reduce the resolution in order to reduce moire effects. That is why computer generated graphics look alot sharper than camera pictures.

HD uses 8 bits per pixel and UDH uses 10 bits giving better colour rendition.

UHD also can display a wider range of colours.

HD uses 25 frames per second where as UHD uses 50 frames per second (not interlaced)

So UHD should look better even further away from the screen.

Re: 4K/UHD really isn't much better than HD.

Sky do not currently support BT.2020, which allows for a wider range of colours (Wide Colour Gamut, or WCG). They are using BT.709 UHD source material (broadcast or on demand), as with HD. BT.2020 will probably come with HDR (it normally does). At the moment the benefits of Sky Q's "10-bit colour" are negligible and probably relate to no more than being able to send higher precision after compuation rather than having to truncate back to 8-bit.

But, for people with TVs too small to show the benefits of UHD resolution at their normal viewing distance, you are right, the higher datarate and so reduced compression artifacts is probably the main benefit of UHD now . Hopefully, HDR/BT.2020 will come soon, although it was not mentioned at all in their strategy for 2018, part of their recent presentation to investors, which was a little worrying!

Re: 4K/UHD really isn't much better than HD.

Hi Everyone,

I have noticed a difference with Sky Q over my old HD box and generally speaking I am happy.

I watched Ninja Turtles and the latest Pirates of the Caribbean film and I was blown away by the picture and audio quality.

What I have noticed though, from my position, is that some 4k programmes are really poor, and some are outstanding. Just recently I  watched Blacklist, then Brittania.  Blacklist was shocking, absolutely abysmal.  Brittania was intense, fantastic colour and clarity.

Why should this be?

(my Sky signal is constant at 90/90 very strong)

Additionally, apart from calibrating my TV I have also purchased a mains conditioner. If you're serious about picture quality, plug your TV and Sky box  in to an electrical mains conditioner and see the results for yourself.

All the best.
