4K Cricket picture much duller than HD one.

I'm watching the cricket on 404 and it looks fine in terms of brightness. My Sky setting is 1080i.

When I change it to 2160p 10-bit and view the same channel the picture brightness remains fine. But if I press OK to select UHD the picture brightness reduces significantly.

Anyone else noticed this?

hi @Ray+P

Have you checked to see what TV modes are available when watching in UHD  ?

Typically TVs have different settings for the UHD/HDR modes and may default to a 'medium' rather than a bright room setting

What TV mode are you using when watching in HD - are you using modes such as Vivid or Sports.

Often modes like  Vivid & Sports ramp up the brightness to artificial levels more useful for display in TV showrooms than watching in a domestic environment, so if you are used to these really bright modes the 'extended' range that HDR brings (particulaly the HLG version that SKY uses) may seem to take it down a notch

Hi @Ray+P   To rule out a problem with your TV not correctly switching to HLG HDR, try 2060p 8bit.

Re: 4K Cricket picture much duller than HD one.

@nigea99 , I've had my TV professionally calibrated so it stays In Personal Mode permanently. I suppose I could change to another mode but that shouldn't be necessary. When I watch a 4K UHD disk I don't need to select a different TV Picture mode.

HDR 10-bit has been fine for a while. It just seems they've changed something requiring users to change their TV settings. ☹️

@MightyQuinn , that's increased the brightness comparable to 1080i. So something wrong with 10 bit mode than carries HDR.

hi @Ray+P

Was it also calibrated with an HLG HDR signal  ?

AFAIK calibration needs to be done on each input/ source type

Re: 4K Cricket picture much duller than HD one.

The last time I used this was when I had a Yamaha AVR which couldn't support 4K pass through. The HDMI cable went straight to the TV from the Sky box. Audio was via Coax digital.

Two days ago I changed to an Arcam AVR that does support 4K pass through. But given the same HDMI cable is used from the AVR to TV for 4K Blu-ray and Sky and exhibits no issues it's definitely a Sky issue, not my kit.

Hi @Ray+P   It is suggesting that your TV is not switching to HDR(HLG). On my Sony XR-55A95K the HD channel is dull compared to the UHD HDR(HLG) channel (2160p 10bit).

@nigea99 , yes it was. It's no great shakes. I can live without HDR/HLG from Sky as I find it quite poorly implemented.

Re: 4K Cricket picture much duller than HD one.

@MightyQuinn , how does your 2160p 8-bit picture compare to 1080i? Mine is the same brightness. 10-bit definitely a lot duller even whilst still in the menu system.

Re: 4K Cricket picture much duller than HD one.

It's the same on the F1 channel. But if I bring up the TV menu I have 3 HLG picture options. HLG Bright, Dark and Premium.

Premium looks best. 👍
