3rd party router not connecting via Ethernet

As per the title really, have had BeFibre installed today and I would ideally prefer to connect via Ethernet (I have managed to connect via wifi). I just can't make it work, it keeps telling me there is no connection - I have tried all sorts including a different, brand new Ethernet cable, all to no avail. Have tried resetting router and Q Box, but I'm stumped.

Any suggestions?

Hi @Oompaloompa   Are you resetting the network connection and choosing wired?

Yes, tried doing that several times but it doesn't work

I have connected via wifi until or if I can solve the problem, now the minis keep dropping their network connections to add to the dilemma.

Re: 3rd party router not connecting via Ethernet

Wouldn't that happen automatically when I select connecting to a 3rd party router?

Hi @Oompaloompa   Nope. But you probably need it for the Minis in any case, or at least the 5GHz band.

Ok, that's worth a look then, I'll have a play and see what happens.

Thanks for your time on this.

Well no because that could also use wifi

if you're using wifi for the minis, only disable 2.4GHz. Better to cable those too if you can.

Re: 3rd party router not connecting via Ethernet

Well I've given up trying to get the Ethernet connection to the main box working, I'll settle for the wifi connection.

In relation to the 2.4ghz or 5.0 ghz connection, is it still correct that wifi hotspots via the minis only work on the slower connection? I'm unclear on which is best or do you have both turned on?

TIA

Hi @Oompaloompa

Q boxes are only Hotspots if using Sky Broadband.

Re: 3rd party router not connecting via Ethernet

Thanks @oldfella but according to this they are hotspots regardless of ISP. This is why everything is just so confusing.

That's all correct @Oompaloompa .

I should have said that Hotspots on Q boxes are only on by default when using Sky Broadband.

They will only be 2.4 Ghz in all cases.

ie

regardless of whether they on by default with Sky Broadband or switched on for 3rd Party broadband.

Re: 3rd party router not connecting via Ethernet

Ahh, righto, then with a 3rd party router, should I enable 5.0 or 2.4, or both? That's what I am struggling with.

Hi @Oompaloompa

If you switch the Hotspots on(must be done in the main Q box) they will be 2.4 Ghz only.

I assume you are referring to the 2.4Ghz and 5 Ghz settings in the mini Settings.  If your minis are on WiFi they need the 5 Ghz on to connect to the main Q box.

The hotspots will use the 2.4Ghz provided you don't turn it  off .
