Hey,
I am due an upgrade to sky Q, I have a second TV upstairs that is connected from the Sky dish via a cable into the back of the TV - this setup gives me free view into the 2nd TV. I asked in this forum and was advised the engineer needs to bring a hybrid LNB to keep the second TV working.
I had a slightly frustrating call with sky to ask the engineer to bring the hybrid LNB, and he told me my setup with a cable into the back of the TV isn't possible - I told him that's what I had, and it works, although he kept telling me it wasn't possible. He also said the LNB won't allow the second TV to work and kept trying to sell me sky multi-room.
I asked him whether he could speak to an engineer to confirm, but I couldn't get a straight answer. If I upgrade to Sky Q, will a hybrid LNB allow the second TV to work? Either without a box and straight into the back of the TV, which is my existing setup, or using my old box as a freesat box. The Sky assistant said it's simply not possible to have sky Q running and have anything else work unless I have multi-room. When I call back, what do I need to ask the engineer to do?
Cheers everyone,

Just to be clear, is your second TV receiving Freesat, not Freeview?
Freeview is received via an aerial whereas Freesat is received via a satellite dish.
If your second TV has a Freesat tuner and is receiving free-to-air channels via a cable from your existing dish (presumably you have Sky+?) connected directly to the TV then a hybrid LNB will allow you to continue to have Freesat on that TV whilst supplying Sky Q to your new box.
Technical knowledge is sadly lacking in many Sky employees and they tend to be more willing (unsurprisingly) to try and sell you Multiscreen instead at further cost.

Hi,
Thank your for your response - I don't have an Ariel in the house, so it must be Freesat.
The Sky employee advised the hybrid LNB is the standard for a Sky Q dish, although previously on this forum it was suggested I specifically needed to ask to make sure the engineer had one with him.
I take it the Hybrid LNB isn't a standard item?
Thanks,

It never used to be standard, no, it had to be specifically requested. They might be confusing hybrid with wideband.
Just clearly make them aware that you have an existing Freesat setup which you want to continue using and request that they fit a hybrid LNB and connect your existing cable for your second TV to it, as well as fitting the new cabling for Sky Q.
A half decent engineer should know what you mean but make sure you check the upstairs TV is receiving Freesat before they leave.

Hi,
Yes, I have sky+ at the moment, the set-up upstairs is a cable directly from the dish into the back of the TV, there isn't a box. This gives me the freesat channels

I guess that is the 'generous' explanation - sometimes it is quite frighetening that the advisers don't use their systems to be accurate in what they advise
@Blue+Ant As @SlenderRobert says the Hybrid LNBs are not standard & generally I think SKY are trying not to agree to use them & generally really must agree before installation (although I think in this case it was ignorance & not the latter).
If SKY will not install a Hybrid LNB then you could get an independent engineer to set one up afterwards - hybrid LNBs have both wideband outputs for SKY Q and legacy 'universal' outputs for Freesat boxes and Freesat capable TVs

Thanks everyone - I'll call them again and have another go armed with this information!

I spoke with Sky, they aren't keen on a hybrid LNB at all! The advisor says she's never heard of it and it's normal for freesat to stop working with SkyQ, before trying to sell me multi-room again. She advised it's something to discuss with the engineer when he arrives, however she states she can't put a note requesting the engineer bring one, but he 'should have all the equipment'.
I'm not that confident in success - is SkyQ much better than Sky+? I'm tempted to cancel the upgrade and just keep what I have

I am sorry that you are getting such responses but, unfortunately, it doesn't surprise me.
SKY Q vs SKY HD is quite personal - the main benefits for me were UHD & Atmos sound & in my case another benefit wasgetting full HD & surround sound via a mini in my bedrrom - a good improvement over the mono RF feed when I had SKY HD
I would suggest you also read some notes I have put together for people thinking of switching :

I have escalated your post to a SKY support team who, hopefully, will be in touch.
They are well versed in all aspects and should be able to give greater clarity on the current situation with Hybrid LNBS
They may not be able to directly help with the Engineer being able to bring a HYBRID LNB but hopefully your contact with them will help you decide the way forward
Please see this link re the escalation and what you might see:

I believe they try to refresh the card which sometimes works first time but I think it can take several attempts and even then sometimes it needs some other background process oops forgot to remove this section from my copied section reply
If you are using Safari I believe you must make sure that 'Hide IP adress' is not checked in settings to be able to see it - if you have difficulty finding that setting then may be try accessing here with another browser

@Blue+Ant so just to be clear on what you have the cable definately comes from the dish into the back of your TV so the TV has a freesat tuner built in to it?
The cable definately doesnt come from your Sky +HD box into the back of your TV ?
Only asking as it would have a bearing on what the engineer would say/do if they have a hybrid lnb on the van
26 Jun 2023 05:19 PM
Hi, yes - definitely no box.
When the engineer first installed the dish he put a cable in upstairs and a second downstairs. The downstairs one is connected to the box, and the upstairs cable screws directly into the back of the TV.
I do have an old box that I used to use on an old TV if it's needed, but it's not in use at the moment
