Sky have decided that is the way they'll do things. If you subsequently fail the credit checks any initial payment would be refunded after about 14 days.

@Hydam 

if you have only just past the credit checks then they are known to ask for an upfront payment. The amount you pay of them taken off what you will be paying for it over the length of your contract,
