What’s app phone call charges from abroad

I'm in Italy and used WhatsApp from my hotel room where I have wifi, to call U.K. which has started a roaming charge.

does anyone know why?

Thanks.

To start roaming your device has to connect to a cellular service and make a call/text or use some data.

I would advise using flight mode - which can still connect to WiFi.

Thanks, I hadn't realized as I use WhatsApp for messages.  I assumed WhatsApp calls were the same.

WhatsApp messages and calls will use data.  Which if connected to WiFi only won't start roaming.

However, your device has connected to a local cellular service and triggered activation.  (By using flightmode this cannot happen)
