I recently went to dominican republic after two days into my holiday I received a txt message saying there seems to be some extra spend on your account,
I checked my phone to discover £200 charges for data,
How could this be?
I did not use my phone at all because I could not get a signal, I tried sending a txt message and whats app but both failed until I used my wifes hotspot,
My argument is I did not receive the usual txt notification on landing about excessive data charges, I have searched deleted messages and recovered just incase I deleted by mistake, but no warning message received,
I have now placed a limit on my phone which I didn`t know about,
Has anybody else had this problem

Find out moreHi @Tony19651 unfortunately the text message isn't guaranteed and unless you turned roaming and mobile data off in your phone settings before leaving the UK then as soon as you land your phone will connect to the local network and start using data. You will be liable for the charges as your phone will have used the data.
Always check charges for roaming before travelling. To avoid these charges I always turn off data, turn off roaming, activate flight mode before leaving the Uk. Then on arrival only turn on WiFi when it's available.

Unfortunately that means Sky can demonstrate that you intended to make use of both local phone services and cellular data.
At £2.16 per megabyte, it takes very little time for just background processes on a smartphone to rack up that kind of cost.

I have now placed a £45 limit on my phone and will turn roaming off in future whilst abroad
the bill was for last month £212 .00 instead of my sim only cost of £10
I feel like I`ve been robbed in broad daylight
(at least **bleep** Turpin had the decency to wear a mask when he robbed someone)

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreThe Dominican Repblic is a "Rest of the World" coutry so the £2 daily charge doesn't apply as these are the charges:
£2,160 per GB (yes this is correct)
£2.16 per minute Calls to local or UK mobile and landline numbers
£1.80 per minute to receive calls
£0.50 per text message to UK numbers and mobiles
£0.58 per picture message(MMS)
The fact you even loaded up Whatsapp means mobile data is being used (unless you used a Wifi connection) so unless you have disabled it other apps could be using background data.
