I've just returned from a holiday in the Maldives. I did not make or accept any calls knowing the high prices but two missed calls are showing as charged £2.88 each even though I didn't answer. I don't understand how this works as I can't control who calls me!

True, but you can control if you are connected to the cellular network.
To avoid charges I would turn roaming, data and cellular off.

Your device must have connected to the cellular network - otherwise they wouldn't know you were there... (And couldn't charge you)

I definitely didn't listen to voicemail and there's no messages on there....

It's strange. I definitely turned off all but got messages outlining the cost on initial arrival and a week later. I used wifi calling to call family as I knew costs were high. It's not a major issue as only two missed calls are charged for but seems odd so I thought I'd ask.

No - neither.
I got stung in Dom rep many years ago so always switch it off before departing!

Hi @HMJ wifi calling doesn't work from overseas, it converts to a normal call, that will be what the charges are for.
