New contract instead of upgrade

I accidently bought a new phone on contract instead of upgrading my current phone, do I have to ring up and return my new phone?

If you have received this new phone then yes you will have to call them on 150 to get this sorted. Ordering another one via the upgrade will mean that you will be credit checked again.
